So, I had the skin biopsy done to check for small fiber polyneuropathy. I was fairly sure it would come back positive, on the other hand since no test they ever do on me shows anything I was fairly sure it would come back negative.
It came back inconclusive!
Evidently, they check the skin and the nerves. My nurse said that the skin part was normal, and usually when the skin is normal the nerves are normal. However, in my case the nerve study for me was "very low normal" so basically too low to be negative, but too high to say conclusively that I have SPFN.
Oh well. Knowing wouldn't have really gained me much other than some actual diagnosis I could point at and a possible cause for some of my pain. I do wonder if they'd checked different areas if it would have come back differently. There were about half a dozen spots they could check, and my doc asked about where the neuropathy starts/stops. since it's mostly feet and hands he went ahead and used the spot just up my leg as the "normal" comparison, but I do get the pain up into my lower legs at times, so I do wonder if that threw it off.
Anyone else have the skin biopsy done? Where did they check you? Did it come back positive?
