Lupus and Fibromyalgia?

This is my first time in this section. I was finally diagnoised with lupus (SLE the most common type of lupus) in February. In June during my appt with my rheumatologist he told me I also have fibromyalgia. Can I have both and not even know it. I know all about lupus but nothing about fibromyalgia. Are the symptoms close to the ones of the lupus? Joint pain, low grade fever, migraines,vomiting and diarrhea during flares, always exhausted. Never enough sleep? Any impute and advice would be much appreciated. Thank You. Dynamite

So many of us have more than 1 issue to deal with..

Pain in all 4 quadrants is usual with fibro myalgia , any soft tissue can be an issue...muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and of course fatigue..often ,sleep issues

I am not very familiar with lupus, but would imagine some of the symptoms overlap..

Fibro by itself can present in different ways with different people..

My sister has big problems with restless legs with hers, but mine is much more pain

Hi, Dustmite, and welcome! Yes, fibro has many of the same symptoms as lupus and, yes, you can have both. We have a member who has both lupus and fibromyalgia.

LJM is correct in that fibro is found in all four quadrants of the body, that it affects muscles, tendons, and ligaments, and there are fatigue and sleep issues. We also usually have some cognitive memory problems that we call fibro fog.

Be sure to read Fibro 101... the first thread on the forum. There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there. Good starting links for you would be What Else Could It Be and A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia. All of Fibro 101 is good so do read it.

I'm diagnosed with primary Lupus (SLE) and secondary Fibromyalgia.

YES, symptoms can overlap. I thought for sure, 100%, I was in a lupus flare. My rheumatologist drew labs on me of course and they all came back pretty good. I am in a Fibro flare.

It's hard to to tell the difference sometimes obviously. My biggest advice is to make sure you follow up with your rheumatologist as often as he says. Make sure you get your labs drawn when he says. You could be in a lot of pain and think it's your Fibro but it's really Lupus and you need Prednisone or something (Pred doesn't work for Fibro) etc.

I know how you feel. I am still struggling coming to terms with my diagnosises.

What will help ,I have both as well,considering Celebrex for pain .

I am sick of flare ups.

Try to take magnesium daily.

I only have fibro pain but a lot of it..i take some low dose tramadol

But i still need other ways to deal with pain..heat, acupressure, at times therapy..

Supplements, and topical pain relievers..

I am sure in a flare this week..so i am trying different ways of coping...

We need a many pronged approach
