Hello - I was just told I have Fibromyalgia by my rheumatologist but need to wait on my blood work results to confirm this diagnosis.

In the meantime, I have a question regarding a test I had done many years ago on my legs. I was seeing a neurologist regarding tingling to my hands/wrist and feet/ankles. He did a test on me called an EMG (Electromyogram) on my legs to find out how my muscles were working and looking for any nerve disorder. Once the test was completed, he told me I did not have any low scores and my scores were fine. He also said I did have extremely good scores / very high #s. Could this have been a sign of Fibromyalgia?

Just wondering as I wait for my blood results. Thanks for your time.

I do not know about the EMG testing..

But the blood work would be more to rule other things out , i think,
Unless there is something new that identifies fibromyalgia..

We are often diagnosed by ruling out other similar disease..

Having a good dr. Work with you, is very important. Finding what works is often trial and error..

But you can get help and feel better..lj

Lim2014 you are quite right, the are no blood tests for fibro, may I ask how long it took you both to get diagnosed.

Hi, Birdstar, and welcome! It sounds like the EMG test came back good for you. I don't know anything about this test but it pretty normal for us to have tests and they all come back like we are the picture of health. Because of this, for many years some doctors would say it was all in our heads and send people to a psychiatrist! That doesn't happen a lot now. If you ever have a doctor say that to you, run for the exit!

I will say that doctors now think fibro is a neurological problem and it does affect our nerves. There is a link about it when you first open Fibro 101. The link is by Dr. Daniel Clauw who has been researching fibro for years. Many of us get tingling, buzzing in our muscles. I also get feelings like a bug is crawling on me or water is running down my leg. I get hot and cold spots too. It's really weird so this could have possibly been a signal of Fibro.

It sounds like your rheumy is being thorough. They need to rule out other illnesses that have many of the same symptoms as fibro...things like lupus and Lyme disease. Make sure these were included in the blood work...especially Lyme disease.

Be sure to read Fibro 101...the first thread on the forum. There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there.

I was diagnosed in my thirtees..i am considered to have a genetic form, and my mom was already diagnosed, as well as an older sister.

Mine is more pain and my sisters presented very differently..i had some symptoms even as a child..but got worse in my thirtees..

I too have had the EMG tests. I believe purpose is to find (in my case, prove) nerve or muscle damage. (Workmans compensation wants PROOF)

Hello, I'm new here too. I had the EMG too and I believe it was to find muscle and nerve damage as DianeB stated. I had and have pretty severe Restless Leg and they were testing for that as well. I would think if your levels are high that it would mean you have good muscle and nerve control. I'm no expert by any means, but I think usually if you have a low score, your nervous system isn't working well, because you are not feeling the jolt or your muscles are not responding as they should. I was diagnosed in 2006 and was a lucky one, it only took Drs two years to figure it out. I had a lot of depression and anxiety issues waiting to find out why I was in pain all the time.
