Laryngitis with fibromyalgia

I have just been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I have also with this recent episode of pain developed laryngitis for no apparent reason. My rheumatologist says it is not related, but I have no fever, soreness of throat or glands, and it has lasted 3 weeks. Has anyone ever experienced this as part of fibromyalgia?

Hi, Newbie, and welcome! Laryngitis is the inflammation of the voice box. Fibro is not an inflammatory illness according to the National Institutes of Health. Your rheumy is correct. I have never head this associated with Fibro. Perhaps you strained your throat somehow. Just guessing here. I'm sure it will clear up soon.

Be sure to read Fibro 101...the first thread on the forum. There are links to good I fo about Fibro and you will learn a lot there. A good starting link for you would be A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia. All of Fibro 101 is good so do read it.

Do you have heartburn? I had silent heartburn which irritated my vocal cords. It caused chronic laryngitis for weeks with me.

Something to think about.

Hi Newbie,

It's nice to meet you. I was diagnosed with laryngitis years ago due to my living in an apartment building with a lot of passive smoke from my neighbors circulating into my apartment through the ventilation.

I don't believe they're associated: fibro and laryngitis, but our bodies do seem to be more sensitive.

Hi Newbie! I have this trouble too and at one point lost my voice for 6 months. I've read a few medically based articles that say you can get laryngitis when you have fibrimyalgia, and women aged 50 - 56 are more susceptible to it. But I'm guessing anyone with fibro can be affected by it.

I know laryngitis is actually a viral infection, so maybe it isn't an actual infection that we get, but something simular that affects our larynx in the same way. Making our larynx swell and there-by causing laryngitis.

I guess its just one of the many joys of fibro. You can apparently get some prophylactic called lyrica that should help prevent it. I've just had another bout of it now, and mine lasted for 3 weeks too. It went but has now come back again. Its exhausting!

Thanks so much for your reply, I'll have to do some more in depth research. I do have a cardiac issue although its checked on annually its more or less benign. But, if they are classing laryngitis as a pulmonary issue, then maybe it has to do more with my cardiac issue than with my fibro.

I know that my immune system isn't the best because of my health issues, and I technically work in a field where Im more open to infections. (I work in paediatric ventilation, with tracheostomys.)

Theres still so much that we don't know about fibromyalgia, and I'm still learning how to handle it effectively as I was only diagnosed 2 years ago. I'm sure it's going to be a continuous learning curve in finding the things that trigger me, and planning out my life so I'm not doing too much that'll trigger a flare up.

Hello again!

No worries about the manners, it's how we roll in the shire!

I do have high blood pressure and was started on mediaction for it last year. If this is indeed a reaction to my blood pressure then it would explain alot about my numerous repititon of laryngitis episodes. I will most definitely be looking up those articles you've suggested. Thanks so much for your help and advice. Things seem a tad more understandable now.

I don't often let my fibromyalgia or my blood pressure etc get to me. And I often look at it that I control it. It doesn't control me. But there are also times when I get so frustrated as it feels like my body is betraying me, and I just don't know what to do so I can get back on level ground. So having these suggestions has really helped. Thank you again!
