Hi Everyone,

 

     I'm just learning to accept and deal with my dx of fibromyalgia and then last night I took a pretty good fall and injured my knee and a couple of toes.  Right after I fell my knee was extremely painful and I couldn't put any weight on it.  My DH took me to the dr. this morning and, after X-rays, he told me that I should rest my knee for a couple of weeks and see if it gets better or stays the same.  There was no obvious fracture (except in my toe), but he said there could be a torn ligament.  If it doesn't get better, I'll have to see an orthopedist so he could determine what the problem is.  In the meantime, I have a knee brace and crutches (which I hate to use!).  This is the same knee that I tore apart about 20 years ago in an ATV accident and the same knee that has pretty severe arthritis.  It was such a dumb accident - I was stepping over a low fence to get into my garden.  I got one foot in there just fine, but when I lifted my other foot, I lost my balance somehow and twisted my knee really hard and caught my toes in my sandal.  I landed on my bottom so at least I had a soft landing! tongue    It was one of those times when you wish you could rewind and do it all over again with a better outcome.  I've gone in and out of that garden dozens of times this summer and never had a problem before, but I really did this one up really good!  I'd really appreciate prayers that my knee would heal on it's own so that I don't have to deal with an orthopedist or knee surgery.  Thanks!!

Aawwww Nancy I'm so sorry!!! If there is one thing us fibromites are good at it is falling. I come so close to falling all the time and say a little prayer each time I'm spared. My DH has one of those little fences around his tomatoes and I wouldn't dare try stepping over it for that reason. I've only had one bad fall since being dxd (knock on wood and I did).

 

I will pray that it is a quick recovery without anything else having to be done to it. Be careful on the crutches.

Nancy,

You are certainly in my prayers.  I was just diagnosed about four months ago and I'm a slow learner for sure.  Please try to take good care of yourself so you don't have to have surgery.

Right this minute I am chomping at the bit to go back outside and cut back my roses.  After all this rain we just had, they would bloom like crazy.  But, that's how I got bursitis in both hips and had to have both hips injected with steroids twice within six weeks period.  I wonder if this is what an addict feels like?  I only have 12 bushes.  Somebody needs to hit me in the head.  nono

Please don't act like me!  :-)

I need to focus on going back to water aerobics tomorrow.

Nancy, bless your heart, you sure will be in my prayers.  I fall a lot too and I've had double knee replacement.  It scares me to death that I'm going to injure my knees.  I have never fell and hurt myself as bad as you have but I know a little bit about what your going through.  Just be careful while in the healing process.

I will be praying for you.  I haven't fallen, but I bump into a lot of walls.  I can relate.  Balance is not always good.  Take care and know that there are people thinking about you!

Ouch Nancy!  Ok, sending prayers up and good thoughts your direction.  Let us know how you are doing.  Carla, you sound just like me.  I am allergic to many plants and weeds and animals and can't stay away from them.  The other day I pulled the morning glory and grapes from the top of the duck pen because we are going to reroof it and got covered in hives.  But, I'm gonna keep at it! Because even though I am allergic to these things, they are also my favorite things (not weeds!  cool )  Silly me.

I'm so sorry! I hope you knee gets better with rest. Gardening can be dangerous, lol. I have a bad knee that can give out on me. It did last year when I got buzzed by a hummingbird, the noise frighteneed me so much (it was liek a fighter plane coming right at my head) I took a step back, fell in a hole, and twisted it up. :P

Thanks so much for your prayers and kind thoughts!!  It's so great to be able to come to this forum and know that there are so many wonderful, caring people out there.  I'm going to be sitting around a lot for the next couple of weeks so I'll have more time to be on the forum. 

Today I'm super exhausted because of all the trauma of the last couple of days.  Also, learning to use crutches again is tiring.  My armpits are already sore and I've only been doing this for one day!  yeah My left leg is going to get really strong since it has to support all of me as I hobble around on the crutches!  I'm always grateful for my wonderful DH, but I'm especially so when I'm laid up like this.  He is always right there to see if I need anything and he helps to keep my spirits up.  It's really hard for me to be so dependent, though.  I can't even carry my own glass of water around!  Seems like I have to ask for help to do most everything.  This is one of those times when "in sickness and in health" really comes into play.

Hi Nancy,

I can sympathize with your pain.  about 28 years ago I was knocked down at the rink while roller skating by 2 boys that thought racing around the track would be a good idea.  I have had 2 knee surgeries since then and have run the gambit of canes, crutches, knee braces and finally a wheel chair.  I found that wearing the knee brace whenever I was doing any walking or activity helped to keep in place and stop the twisting.  Are your crutches the wooden kind or the fore arm kind?  I've tried both and prefer the fore arm by a long shot.  They just seem to be easier to get around with and will stay on your arm if you need to have one hand free to do something.

I hope you will be feeling better and back on your feet soon.  Remember, sandals and gardens don't mix. yeah

I have had fribromyalgia for a year now. I don't fall down I just run into anything and everything, i will be praying for you. tammy

I've had fibro for a number of years now, and have fallen down on many occasions. The problem is my "hind" foot gets caught. Hubby and I have just put it down to clumsiness on my part, but now I see that fibro is the culprit for yet another symptom confused .

I'm so sorry you injured youself, Nancy, and hope you don't have to see the ortho surgeon yeah

Hi Nancy.....greetings from the very hot state of Oklahoma. I will pray that your knee heals on its own. What a blessing that you have such a loving husband. Be kind to yourself and let hubby be nice to you. Let him do some things, although we all know that you could probably do them better! Doctors are nice but we know Who the real healer is.

Nancy, I don't know how I missed this thread!  That sounds like a really bad fall to me.  You're lucky you didn't break something.  I've got you on my prayer list for a complete recovery...minus the surgery!  Hope you are doing better today and are getting used to those crutches.  Do you have a desk chair on wheels that you could sit in and push  yourself around the house with your good leg?  That would be easier than the crutches and you could carry things on your lap.  You woulnd't have to use the crutches as much either.  Just a suggestion.....Feel better!

Again I'd like to say thanks to everyone for all the thoughts, prayers, and caring responses! I don't want to get too excited yet, but tonight my knee seems to feel a little bit better. I am able to put a slight amount of weight on it without it hurting nearly as much as yesterday. I'm hopeful that means that it is beginning to heal by itself so that I won't need any further medical help.

Using a desk chair with wheels on it is a good suggestion, but we don't have one like that. I'm learning to navigate pretty well with the crutches (they're the aluminum kind that go under the arms) and I have a fanny pack that I use to carry things back and forth if my DH isn't around to help me. I'm going to stay optimistic that I won't need them very long!

Hope everyone has a very restful night! BTW, since I started taking 100 mg. of Elavil before bedtime, I'm sleeping better than I have in years!

Even if they tell you that surgery is a good idea... you may want to hold off on it. I goofed up my knee a year ago February and I have no insurance. My daughter works in physical therapy and she told me to order a knee brace and wear it every day for at least six months. I hated to do it but I followed her advice. It's one of those ones with metal and velcro, like the basketball players wear.

Slowly but surely the knee healed and now I just wear the brace on the days I have to deliver wedding cakes or when I'm going to be extra busy to protect the ligaments. They will probably never be perfect again because I'm diabetic and we have decreased circulation to the ligaments and tendons so healing is spotty at best. My doctor was all about holding off on knee surgery because of the threat of infection and possible amputation. Right now it's about 90% most days unless I overwork it. I can swim my laps again and I'm a happy camper. Just my 2ยข.

I'm glad the knee is better Nancy. Jeannie is right surgery doesn't always make it the way it was before anyway. So hopefully it will heal on it's own.

I am so sorry to hear about your fall. Switch between ice and heat. If you also use elevation this will help alot. I am new to this site. I was afraid that if i started to talk about my illnesses it would just bring me down. I will pray for you to have peace and comfort and for complete healing. Hope you have a good day tomorrow.
