Hi Everyone:
I have not tried malic acid or magnesium malate yet. I do use magnesium glycinate and at bedtime now a product called magnesium calm. I do find that magnesium helps my stomach. I have I.B. and go up and down with problems. Nortriptyline may contribute to constipation. I don't wish to give Nortriptyline up. My Doctor said to try the Magnesium Calm at bedtime. I have just over a month stopped using Losec/Omeprazole. I was having so much stomach trouble this year. I discussed stopping its use with my Doctors. Losec/Omeprazole reduces acidity. It can cause side effects when used long term. Two potential side effects were - risk of fractures and bacterial infections. One bit of info linked it to C. Diff - something that I have had. When you have I.B. you often have trouble with gas. It is so embarrassing and you have little control. I am hoping that my stomach will be able to adjust itself, acid wise, in time. You can get malic acid from apples or apple juice so maybe an apple a day is not bad idea. I will ask my Doctor about
using magnesium malate when my glycinate is finished.
I think some supplements, if your body has enough of it, can cause diarrhea. I have found it with Vitamin C once. Had a hard time feeling better after a virus and I was ingesting rolls of vitamin C drops. Eventually, it caused diarrhea and I stopped eating them and began to fell well. I now take 1,000 mg of Vitamin C a day. I do take 4,000 mg of Vitamin D a day and there is some in a multi-vitamin. I take an Omega 3, CoQ10 and Plant Sterols. This has gotten my cholesterol under control.
I am a little bit unsure of the Calcium. I was for years taking supplements to get 1,500 mg a day. A couple years ago I was told to reduce it to 1,200 mg a day. You do have to factor in calcium you get in foods and supplements. I have now been told that I should try to get all my calcium from food sources. I was told that I can take a calcium supplement or the multi-vitamin. I chose the multi-vitamin. I became lactose intolerant with the C. Diff infection and I still am. I can now eat yogurt. I drink almond milk. I eat almonds, broccoli and canned salmon with bones. I am really not sure if I am taking enough. My body does have calcium deposits. I can only hope that if it needs more that it uses the deposits.
Thanks for sharing. It is good to know how other people manage.
