pain meds and explaining them to your kids

Hi everyone,

I've got 3 young women. My 17 year old understands fibro and the meds because she went to alot of the doc appts and watched the trigger point shots ect... My older ones (23 &20) don't get fibro and the meds for the pain. Now my counsler wants to put me on aderall for sleeping at least 14 or more hours a day. This upset the 23 year old. How can I explain so they will understand? Any and all ideas would be appreciated.

Basically what I want to say is that I take adderall and it has saved my life, before that I spent two years in bed. So maybe after they see how much it helps you, they will understand.

I agree with Karen...plus, take THEM to a doc appointment and let them see what you go through just like you do with the younger one. Let them ask the doctor questions. If it were me I would tell the doc that they are worried and that you would like to bring them in. If he's a good doc he'll be all for it.

If I may ask a silly question...is there a reason why he wants you sleeping 14 hours a day? The longer I lay in bed the worse my pain gets. You do need a decent amount of sleep but if I were to sleep 14 hours, or even 9 or 10 I would never move again and my pain level would be a 10 for hours. Pardon me for questioning...I just have never heard of this.

Chutzie, Don't mind a bit and the pcp, and pain specialist have no idea. They seem like they didn't believe me either until my kid told them this was no joke. I really have slept for 2 days with getting up to drink water, go the bathroom and go back to sleep. The other weird thing is that it takes alot for effort to wake up. Recently they all tried at the same time (have been many times my girls have tried) checked my pluse and breathing than gave up. Believe it or not my husband seems to understand and I do get up when he gets home from work. All and all I still sleep from 8, 9,or 10 pm till about 2:20 when hubby gets home and asks if I'm getting up. I'll I can do now is try the adderall. Your right about the pain, when I get up I'm so stiff it takes a while to stretch and work out the stiffness.

That's a lot of sleep.  I try to get 8-9 hours a night.  I wouldn't want to sleep that much.  You are sleeping through OVER have your day!  I know I would want to be awake and live those extra hours a day.  I, too, would be so stiff and in a lot of pain.  If I were you, I'd see if they could give you a lower dose so you only slept 8-9 hours.

lacjac, are you saying you are taking the adderall to help STOP sleeping 14 hrs a day? I think that may have been misunstood in the post, i just wanted to clarify that, the docotors arent waning you to sleep 14 hrs a day, thats why they are giving you the adderall, is that correct?

I hope so.

I too sleep a  bit too much a day but not that many hrs. I do hope the adderall helps you sleep less as thats how I am understanding your post.

Oh MY Goodness sleeping too much is the problem, so YES the adderall would be to stop sleeping 14 hrs a day. If anyone has any ideas I'm really ready to try anything - PLEAS HELP!

Thats what I thought, i think some misunderstood that you were taking to sleep 14 hrs a day smhair

I think the adderall will proably help, i am hoping it does, there are other drugs they can use to keep you awake too, if the adderall desnt work. Good luck smurf

Hi Lacjac,
You mentioned trigger point shots in your post. Can you explain this procedure to me? Are there trigger point shots for fibro? Also, can you tell me what kind of doctor can do the shots? I just saw a rheumy a couple weeks ago, I asked about shots, but he was reluctant to try them because my pain was in several area. Thanks for any info.

Hi Hipe, I guess I'm lucky, my pcp does most of my shots in my back. He will not the the one you get in the lower back I can't remember the name of the nerve (sacrelliac), that shot is for pain in the hips and lower legs. I have to go an anastiglostist for those. The time was unbelieveable and work wonderful, the second set has made me reluctant to go back. Still weighing out the pain vs. not helpful shots. Back to the ones in my back my pcp will do any of them as long as they are not near any nerves. I was going once a week and my husband would massage my back every night till I counldnt take the pain. After a few weeks they have not flared up and I havent had a shot in 4 months in my back. The combonation of shots and massage works real well for me.
