Good morning Everyone!  OK.  I know this is going to sound really weird to you all (except poor widdle deranged Marlee devil )  but, I just heard a noted doctor talking about nightmares and studies that have been done.  It seems that flowers by your bed may help prevent you from having nightmares! 

 

He said that they did a sleep study on people who have nightmares all the time.  AFTER they were asleep, they put fresh flowers by the bed of some and rotten eggs by the bed of others.  When the participants woke up, the ones who had flowers by the bed had pleasant dreams and the ones that had rotten eggs by the bed had nightmares!  It has something to do with the sense of smell being the only sense that gets high up in the brain.  (Not sure if I have that right.  Remember, I have to use closed caption and sometimes they talk too fast for me.)  But, I know there are members here that have said that they have nightmares so this might be worth a try.

Very interesting!!  There is alot to be said about aroma therapy, but I never thought of it for sleep.  You may or may not find this odd, but I was having alot of nightmares a couple of years ago...and out of desperation, I put a Bible under my pillow.  It worked for me...some would think that it was in my subconscious, but whatever it was..it worked.  I love the flower theory though!!

That's very interesting.
I use a cpap for sleep, and lots of people on the cpap forum talk about some stuff they buy that they set by their cpap intake, and the scents get taken up by the machine, and then you breath it in. There are different scents to choose from......like lavender, spring rain, etc. Seems like lots of people get a much better night's sleep when using this stuff. I dismissed it as more-or-less a placebo...but maybe it really works!!

I have a CPAP mask that has a mouthpiece, Like football players wear. I sometimes dream that I am eating something and I wake up chomping on my mouthpiece. The dream food always tastes better. Diane tongue

I don't have nightmares, but ever since I started taking Lyrica I dream all night.  Before, I would never dream or if I did I never remembered it, but I have just noticed lately that I'm dreaming every night.

This is so interesting, I wonder what would happen if they put a turkey dinner by your bed.LOL... Would we dream of food? Would the triptophan (sp) in the turkey help us sleep better?

I think that it is very interesting what you found out Sherrine, I can imagine how the smells of things would influence our dreams, as it does when we are conscious. I just love going into my greenhouse and smelling the flowers and herbs. They always make me feel better. I remember my doctor use to tell me to think about the smells of rosemary which I love so much. Remember how it made me feel when I was working with it. Which was very good.

You put rotten eggs by your bed and I will put flowers by mine and we will compare notes the next day, okay???

 

I use lavender fabric softner that should cause sweet dreams. I had a disturbing dream not long ago, I wouldn't call it a nightmare. Most of the time I don't remember dreams but I have the feeling I have dreamed. Have you ever woke up crying from a dream???

 

Shannon maybe you are sleeping better with the lyrica.

 

This is interesting and I bet many will be doing experiments on this. tongue

I never thought about it that much before, but it could be that I'm sleeping better with the Lyrica. 

 

My rheumy wanted to do the sleep apnea test on me but I refused because I don't think I could ever sleep with anything on my face because I smother really easy.  I think it would cause me a panic attack trying to sleep in all that gear.

I found the sleep study to be very hard the first time, because I couldn't sleep! The second one they let me have xanax, so I slept some.
I was supposed to go back for a "titration study" to determine what kind of mask and settings I needed, but I just couldn't do it. I found a sleep doc who agreed to let me have the machine without another study. Perhaps you could find a doc would agree to let you try a cpap machine at home. I'm very claustraphobic and use a "Swift nasal pillow" for a mask, which isn't too confining at all. One other possibility is for you to try an oximeter at home, which would tell you if you are having some low oxygen spells. The cpap machine has helped me alot.

Tell me more about what a "Swift nasal pillow is".  I've read someone's post before that uses it, but I don't know much about it.

 

My stepson went through all of the studies and says he probably feels better when he was using it, but he can't stand the thing on his face neither.  I don't think his was a nasal pillow though.  It was like an oxygen mask on his nose and mouth.  Since I always sleep on my side, I don't think I could lay on my side with the head gear on my head.

 

I may look into it more, if I thought I could have something that didn't smother me.

Marlee, like you I can't say that I ever remember dreams. I know that I do, cause I've been told by others that I have slept with. (Wow, that almost sounds bad) But I have had nightmares that happened after I was asleep and woke up with huge feelings of being scared and was crying. It's only happened a couple of times in my life, but yes, it has happened.

I rarely have nightmares but, when I do, I have awakened with a jolt and get up and walk around so I don't fall back asleep and back into the nightmare. 

 

OK, Marlee.  I slept with rotten eggs by my bed last night.  I dreamt that I spent the night in my Aunt Blanche's out house.  Now it's time to switch!  I get the flowers and you get the rotten eggs!  devil
