This happen to you?

I have fibro, and my husband and I have noticed a rather strange phenomenon. I was wondering if this has ever happened to anyone else.

The other night we were driving home and he asked me if I had ever been shocked badly. Well, I don't remember ever being shocked at all (except static) and wondered why? He said, "Because sometimes when you're feeling bad I touch you and it feels sort of shocky, like you have electricity running through you."

Okay, that was interesting.

But later on he was holding my hand and I asked him exactly what it felt like.
"Well, it's sort of like a heart beat... but not as regular; and more of an ebb and flow than a beat..." and he went on to describe my pain perfectly.

Last night I asked him if I felt "shocky" and he touched my hand and said no, not too bad. Oh well for that, I thought; I was hurting bad enough! But later I asked him to put his hand on my side (it often helps the nerve pain) and as soon as he touched me he said "Oh honey, you are really hurting there! I can feel it almost to my elbow."

Well, soon it quieted down and he noticed that too; then I had him hold my wrist (another frequent offender that was acting up) and he said "This one is smaller but more intense and localized; it hurts in the middle and bottom of the wrist"!!!! Which was exactly true. That one was so strong it started cramping HIS muscles.

Now, we are not weird people and I don't think this is psycho-somatic stuff. I know that my nerve pain is caused by the electric neuron transmitters going haywire and sending WAY too much info to the brain... but I had no idea that others could feel it like that. Could that explain why it helps to have someone touch it? Might it actually short-circuit the nerve-path and reset it? Is there any research on this sort of thing?Question

Noni, I am not sure about it but reading your story made me remember the time I was pregnant with my last set of twins and we were pondering the idea because this pregnancy felt like the other set of twins I had, so one night we were laying in bed and he rolled over and put his hand on my back and just layed there and after about 2 minutes he said, ummmmmm it is 2 in there, I was floored and 2 days later it was confirmed....so I do believe that people have that gift of experience through touch.

I think your husband is very blessed. So are you. He will never doubt you or think you are overreacting. This is so great! Kind of reminds me of my mother. She always knew when I was hurting badly by looking in my eyes. She said my eyes look haunted when I am in bad shape.

When my hubby can read anything about me lately I will think he is a wonder too but for now whiney and lazy sorry. Calls it likes I see's it.

Eyesoffire, how many sets of twins do you have???

 

Noni, I think it is great your married to such a special person. I do believe there are people on earth with special gifts.

That is wonderfully amazing - I wonder if your husband has this insight with others? Maybe he should be a "Healing Touch" therapist - or a Reiki master. These are learned occupations, but I believe some people are gifted with an innate ability. My daughter has what I call "healilng hands". I don't think she can necessarily feel and or describe my pain like your husband, but her hands do seem to transfer pain relief and relaxation. Sure wish she lived closer!

Hi Donna and welcome. Yes, I know that feeling of being in early 50s and on a down hill slide. I'm now 58 and haven't hit bottom yet but I'm still sliding. I'm glad the lyrica is working for you. I haven't tried it.

 

Some do water exercise which is easier on the body.

Have you tried Yoga? I find that it really helps. My muscles spasm and knot up, the yoga helps me stretch and relax. My first classes were beginner in name only, the class was full of "pretzel people" who thought that going slower and expaining more made it a beginners class. I wouldn't be able to move at all the day after class, I was in so much pain but it wasn't fibro pain, it was the overdoing it pain that you recover from. I noticed that I started to feel a lot better. I paid for 6 weeks, nonrefundable, so I stubbornly kept going. I then found a class that was actually for real beginners and it was wonderful!

If you do try yoga, see if you can try a class before you become obligated to anything. There are chair classes, classes for larger people, older people, people with injuries. Look around and check out the different styles of yoga and different instructors. I don't recommend starting with a DVD, it's far to easy to hurt yourself if you move wrong. After a few months of classes with a good instructor, you can then safely uses DVDs.

My husband calls me about twice a month asking if my back, shoulder, knee, neck, etc. hurts because he can feel that I'm in pain. Almost 100% of the time, whichever part he called about is the exact area that is flaring that day. He can pinpoint the exact area, like "2 inches from your spine just above your shoulderblade" or "your left arm on the back halfway between your wrist and elbow". It doesn't happen all the time but he is almost always correct.

It's definately weird.
