should I go to see my gp?

If the fibro suddenly gets worse - more & strong pain, reduced mobility, etc - should I go to see my gp?

My feeling is that I should work through it by myself with gentle exercise, pacing, etc, but I have healthy acquaintances telling me I should get some medical advice.

What do you all think? Self-management or gp?

hi ivy,

that's a good question. i would think that it would depend on what kind of gp you have-is he/she open and knowledgeable about fibro? i know a lot of gp's out there don't "believe in it" or they just prescribe a bunch of medication for it. personally, i only go to my gp for illness like severe colds/bronchitis kinds of things, but my gp is really unfortunately very clueless.

Hmmm. He's actually much better on rheumatic things than he is on Crohn's.

Thanks for the advice - I'll ring and see if they have any openings.

Every time I've gone they've perscribed me some pain medications which don't help at all. Often times they won't even listen to my complaints of pain and just ask me how I'm doing on other medications.

Ivy, I'll have phases where I feel like I'm really getting a lot worse.  I'm in more pain and mor fatigued...almost weak.  And, it has passed for me and I go back to the way I was. But, if you are concerned, then talk to your doctor about it.

That's a good question. I've just gone through a flare, my own doign by forgettign to take my malic acid. Anyway, I wasn't feelign better after 2 weeks, adn I was contemplating making an appointment. But then I thought, what could he do for me? I toughed it out, adn I'm finally starting to feel better. Let us know what you decide and how it goes, so I'll have an idea for next time! I do hoep you feel better soon.

Hi all,

I wish I'd seen those extra responses before I logged off. I am right then: we just manage flares on our own?

Anyway, I rang the gp's surgery and he has no spaces open for a fortnight, but I'm a frequent flyer there (multiple long-term serious medical conditions as well as fibro) and they said that I should ring my gastro instead, as he's in charge of my care and needs to know about any new symptoms. So... I rang and left a message with his secretary, though what a poor Gastro is supposed to do with a Rheumie flare, I don't know...

If you feel your gp can help you, then I would go. He might be able to give you something to help you through the flare. You never know.

I have learned to live with them, but there are times that I really should of went in. But I don't. I see my doctor when I have to. Every three months. I don't go monthly like I use to. But I hate going into the doctor as it is.

But if you go in and he helps you, you will know if you need to go in when you get a flare. So that is something you might want to think about.
