After we had our dog put down in January, i said we were not getting another. Friday morning we left here to do some errands

I bought a five dollar lottery ticket and won 500.00 wooohoooo.. My daughter and I went to the local pet store They had a Aussie / collie mix. He is so cute I called my husband he came over and looked at him  I started crying because I realized feb 14 was Lucys birthday. I decided that I was not getting puppy. daughter and hubby talked me into it. He is so adorable and takes a lot of work but boy am I happy he is hereHe is 10 weeks old .Lucy was a aussie/rottie mix and she was the best my vet told me a while ago that the aussies end up in pounds alot because people get them and do not realize how much room they need to run. They are a hearding dog and they will try to herd small kids and other dogs. My sons pug is having a hard time adjusting he is laying around not playing he is depressed that he is not center of attention. I have tried to give him extra attention all he wants to do is snuggle will not play.. It has been alot of work so far but thats ok I am loving it...

Congratulations on becoming a Mommy again!  I know when Sabra passes on I will definitely get another dog.  I can't be without one.  Your son's dog will come around.  They just have to figure out the "pecking order"...just ask Chutz!  LOL

Congrats Lee Ann. Yeah we said after Brandy was gone we would never have another dog. That didn't last long, it was so empty around here. Little Miss Krissy has sure made this house come alive.

 

You have children to help exercise a high energy dog like an aussie/collie. What did you name him???

 

It is sad but so many people get puppies without researching the breed and then when they become too much to handle they go to the pound.

Awww-puppies! I love puppies! Even though they chew things and make messes and bark and demand a lot of attention, they give so much love and affection that they are so worth all of the hassle.

I know how hard it is to bring a new dog into your home after you've had to have one you loved dearly put down. I went through this with our dear sweet Ella. I was never getting another dog, I said! Hubby got a puppy last year and even though I thought he was cute and sweet, I didn't really "bond" with him the way I did Ella-he's definitely my hubby's dog. But then we found little Benji wandering around in the corn fields by my in laws house looking all disheveled and uncared for. We brought him home and cleaned him up and he's been my dog every since. I just love that dog:-) He's brought that joy back into my heart that I never thought I could feel for another dog after I lost my Ella.

I do hope this new puppy is able to heal your heart and become a loving, faithful companion to you! What did you name the little guy?

Congratulations Lee Ann! Your puppy will give you many years of unconditional love and you can't ask for much more than that!

I have a lot of experience with high energy dogs, having Golden Retrievers for the past 25 years. It can be a challenge when you are having a low energy day. I think the best advice I can give you is to begin training your dog with tennis balls and flying discs (can't think of the correct name for it right now). I am not sure what age to begin, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to start now, showing him the ball and disc, having him mouth it, etc.

We got our Benji from a Golden rescue group. I was stunned at the amount of pure bred Goldens that have been relinquished, young ones and older ones, because people simply were not aware of the exercise they require. If a high energy dog is not properly exercised, they become destructive. If you cannot physically exercise him, just getting him into exercising using his brain is good too...teaching him tricks, etc. Well, you had a dog, you probably know a lot of this.

I wanted to offer up Congrats on the new puppy! and ask WHATs it's Name????
I lost my Max 17 yrs old black cat last January (2008) and it was very, vary hard, two months
later a friend came over with a little black kitten, we named him Chancellor and well he's
almost 1 years old and he's still so cute...
Believe it or not but pets help in so many ways, sometimes I wonder if they own us....

How wonderful! I truly believe ppl need a dog in their lives, they are just the best. No offense to cat owner, I'm sure you feel cats are the best also - as it should be. I have never had an Aussie, but I have had two Collies. My 1st one died 12 yrs ago today. He was a Tri-Color and what a baby. He loved to run around, pull the sled, always in motion, but loved to cuddle and sing to me. My 2nd Collie, a Sable & White was from the shelter, he had been mistreated and burned. He ended up being such a lovable baby, I taught him to understand Sign, very smart. He was another boy who loved to run around, until he couldn't anymore. He will be gone 2 yrs in March. I still have my shadow, my Scottie. I would be lost w/o him. As usual, he is right by my feet when I'm on the computer or anywhere else for that matter. I wish you many yrs of love, happiness, and companionship w/ your new little love.

When I was younger, teens and later w/ children, I had several dogs at one time. A lot of fun and excitement, now I am down to one dog and I will probably keep it that way. I think we have had our last 'puppy' but not necessarily our last dog. Don't even want to think about anything happening to my baby. He is so loved and so spoiled. Oh, but he does return it.

I agree that it's really important to understand the needs of your breed and do some research before you bring the dog into your home! My hubby really wanted a Husky, so we did some reading up on them before we went and got one. We ended up getting a Lab/Husky mix from the shelter, but he still acts primarily like a Husky. We put in a pen in our side yard before we got him (Huskies need outdoor space-it doesn't have to be a huge space, but they do need somewhere to go to be outdoors for part of every day) and got lots of dog toys. Our Husky is just over a year old and fixed, but he is still quite the chewer!! When he gets bored, he will chew anything in sight. I can't tell you how many of my boys action figures are now without heads lol. We make sure we always have rawhide bones on hand, though, and that really seems to satisfy his need to chew.

His destructive tendencies also calmed WAY down when we brought our other dog home. Our 2nd dog is a Jack Russel Terrier and was a stray, so we weren't able to read up on his breed before we brought him home, but we did right after. Jack Russel's are easily bored, too, so we went out and bought tug ropes and those two will play with those things for HOURS. It's hilarious because little Benji tries sooooo hard to hold his own against Baer, but Baer outweighs him by over 50 lbs and can send Benji flying across the room with just a flick of his head. lol

I don't know if we would have intentionally gone out and gotten two of the world's most high mantenance breeds, but that's what we've ended up with haha. As long as they get at least 4 walks a day and have toys to play with, they behave pretty well. But oh my gosh when people or trucks go by our house the volume level goes up about 50 decimals LOL. Both of them will get up in the bay window and Baer will HOWL (Huskies don't actually bark much, they howl like wolves. Oh, and they whine. Man, do they whine!) and Benji will get into such a frenzy I worry that he's going to keel over. lol So, yeah, they're a noisy bunch!

I do understand now why there are always so many Huskies and Jack Russels in the local shelters, though. They both need a LOT of attention and it's so sad that so many people don't consider these things before they bring the dogs home..:(

I have to tell you, I'm so jealous!

We lost our dog (well, it was really my husband's) in August. Animosh (which is the ojibwe word for Dog) was a 14 year old chocolate lab/pointer mix. She was THE best! Seriously, we had so many people offer to take her off our hands. She was loyal, and friendly, and very well behaved. She loved to run in the woods when my hubby would take her to our cabin. Our 2 year old granddaughter could pull her around the house by the collar and she was just so tolerant! I didn't realize how much I would miss that little brown mutt! My husband's heart just about broke when she died. She had been healthy right up to that morning, when her heart just gave out on her. She was bi-lingual: my husband pastored a Native American mission church and learned some of the Ojibwe language, and talk Ani some commands! He loved to snack on animal crackers - and he'd throw her the cats all the time (sorry cat owners)!! He hasn't hardly been able to eat animal crackers since.

I have been off work with this awful flare since October. He works long and odd hours, so I spend alot of time alone. I'm just so lonely, and have been hinting around that I'd like a dog for "therapy". Does anyone else feel as though their dog contributes to helping them feel better? I read an interesting article about a woman who got a Mexican hairless breed that gives off heat, and cuddling with her dog is great therapy!

Help me persuade my hubby that I NEED a dog!

You definitely NEED a dog!!! With my hubby and kids off during most days, I spend a lot of time alone, too. I would be terribly lonely if I didn't have my dog. Plus, when I'm having super bad pain days, he cuddles up with me, which a. gives me more warmth and b. comforts me emotionally. Tell your hubby you really need a companion to help keep your spirits up!

his name is cooper he has the collie ears he is 10 weeks old. he already has the tennis ball down pat he follows other dogs lead. He already thinks his name is no..WE are definatley a dog family we each have our own. We have a total of 4 now.. My Hubbies a cocker 4years old a son 3 year old pug daughter chiawawa me puppy I like the big dogs As a child we were not allowed animals in the house. We had a shepard who stayed outside all the time.
I was actually afraid of dogs until I had my beloved Lucy. She will always have a special place in my heart.
My Mom hated dogs she is actually thinking about getting a dog now, She said and I quote "I think you have turned me into a dog person." Yall have a good night..

I am so happy that you have Cooper. It sounds like you have a nice family of pets. I have two dogs and I love them both. They are always there when I need a friend. They are so comforting. I think that I will always have a dog or two.

Your not alone in having a mother that wouldn't allow pets!
My mom never ever allowed us to have a pet and yet, my Dad got a Cat..
My older brother has a dog. lab mix, both of my younger brothers have dogs,
and well I have my Kitties, y'all I'm not offended by your posts, Dogs are dog, and
Cats are cats,ect with other animals. it's just good to have a pet, to me a pet
can be better than a human friend as a pet won't judge ya, and as long as ya love em...

Aww! It's so exciting to have a puppy! I've been hunting for the right shelter dog for a while. I've never had many animals as my mom was so finnacy about them. Chartreux, I have two little kitties so don't feel alone. It's so nice to have a purring bundle of fur on your lap durring a bad flare day. I wouldn't call myself a cat person or a dog person. Maybe a rabbit person. My 5 year old hollad lop is the love of my life.

When I walk at the mall, I always stop by the windows at the Pet store they have there and look at all the puppies. :-)

LOL, getting a new puppy is way better than winning a $500.00 lottery.. but I wouldn't mind having both.. You got the best of both worlds!!

If it wasnt for the extra 500.00 I would not have gotten a new puppy. It is wednesday and I have been up since 3 am with the puppy he is napping I have a hard time napping during the day..

Ahhh,,, the joys of puppies!! I babysat for my girlfriend's puppy a couple of weeks ago.. it was fun but it reminded me how much work it is to have a baby in the house. But when all is said and done, its worth it.
Hope you can get some sleep soon.
