Hey all,

  I have been perusing this site for a few days and decided to join.  I am a former nurse who is now a couch potato! 

I know alot of medical information, unfortunately I can't remember squat! smhair

Anyhoo, glad to be here.  Hope to help and need the support of others.

Hi chrisherry and welcome!

Glad you joined- I was a geriatric nurse for many years and hung up my stethoscope 13-14 years ago. Do not miss the workload but miss the skills. Went into administrative asst. positions since then. Have been off work since May of 08' because the fibro hit me so hard. It has been quite an adjustment, but I am adapting- and I can thank the very special moderators and members here for that.   

Come join in on our daily Koffee Klatches when you can, Chutz (one of our moderators) posts a different subject everyday and keeps us hopping. :-)

Hi, Sherry, and welcome!  May I make a suggestion?  Become an active couch potato!   smilewinkgrin   If you sit or lie too much, you will be stiff as a board with fibro and you will have more pain.  Stretching exercises and walking are great for you.

 

Be sure to check out, if you haven't already, the Fibro 101 thread...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to some good info about fibromyalgia...including a list of stretching exercises that really do help!

 

You have come to a great place.  We do have terrific members that give great support.  The bonus is we all really care about one another.  I'm sure with your background you will be able to help many on this forum, too.

 

I'm so glad that you found us and joined in.  I hope to hear more from you soon.

Hi Sherry and welcome to the family. You have already been given great advice on here. The trick is to keep moving and pushing forward without over doing it and ending up in more pain. We are all different even though we all have fibro and we have to find what is comfortable for us. For some pain is the biggest issue and for others, like myself, fatigue is the biggest issue. The same with treatments what works for some doesn't work for others, it's all trial and error with treating fibro. I do think that most of us agree that moist heat in any form is good for us warm showers, baths, hot tub, moist heating pad or bed buddies you heat in the microwave. Some make their own using long tube socks and filling them with uncooked rice and tying a knot in the end. I find a TENS unit helps me and I use lidoderm patches on pain close to the skin. I don't take narcotics but many do.

 

Read, ask questions, offer suggestions and vent when you need to.

Welome aboard!!

I see several others have stopped by to welcome you, too.  This is a great forum, probably one of the smartest things I've with my computer in a while smilewinkgrin   Everyone here is so wonderful and always willing to help.

Don't worry about your fried nurse brain... there's lots of very smart folks here and we exercise their minds whenever we get the chance and if not, we sure do understand the trial & tribs. of brain fog!!  LOL, I used to be able to type about 75 wpm.  Now I'm lucky if I can remember how to spell!!

Anyway, keep posting and be sure to come visit when you can.

Thanks for the welcome. I try not to be too big of a couch potato, I am also a bed bug, hehe. I'm not too big on the stretching and exercising because
I have alot of muscle spasms. I guess if I stretched more it wouldnt be so bad but I will do pretty much anything to avoid pain. I have had alot of falls though, and have even broken a rib from it. I do have a cane that I use when my hips and knees are killing me but only use it mostly in the house.

Welcome Sherry,

You have already been given great advice by the others. The fibro 101 thread is very helpful. I use the stretching exercises. I've found what Sherrine says is very true. If I keep myself moving, I feel better. On the days I just stay in bed, I'm worse because my legs are so stiff and sore by the time I do get up. Although, there are days I have to stay in bed.

I'm glad you found our site and hope you enjoy and learn as much as I have. On the days you remember, I'm sure you can help alot with all the medical knowledge you know.
