Signed Agreement with you're Rhuemy?

I was just posting about what is going on with my tooth and dry sock and I just wondered,

 

has anyone else had to sign an agreement with their Rhuemy saying that you would not get any pain meds(narcotics) with any other doctors? I thought it was kind of weird, but I signed it.

I have never heard of this but who knows If you fall and brake an arm do you have to call him for pain meds????
I am sure is is trying to be safe since people gp to alot of different DRs. And one could perscribe something that has an ineraction with something you are taking.

I think doctors are doing this with narcotics.  Some people become dependent on meds and then go from doctor to doctor to get the same med...so they can have more of them.  That's probably why your doctor did that and I'm sure he/she does that with all of his/her patients.

She said ER is a different story but in general only she can prescribe. My primary would give me a script for percocet in a heart beat if I asked and she prescribes the higher dosage then my fibro. My fibro is all about getting me off pain meds and I'm like yeah if the pain would go away I'd be about it too, but right now i'm hurting. I just thought it was strange that she asked me to sign it.

Okay, never heard of a doc doing this but I do know when I get my xanax filled whether it be on military base or at a the drug store it comes up in their computers when and where it was filled last. Found that out when the xanax was on the same script sheet as some other meds and they brought it to my attention that I had it filled at Walgreens and when. They did kinda make me feel like a drug seeker.

My brother was a drug seeker and an alcoholic and he was doctor shopping.  That is happening a lot now.  Plus people sell their medication.  So they do have to be careful.  It's not a slight on you.  It's just a precaution that they do with everyone, I would imagine.

I had to sign a paper that said I would take a drug test at any time they wanted me to. So far they haven't asked me to.

It does kind of make you feel like a criminal or something. But they have to watch their backs I guess too.

I think this is going to be a common practice when dealing with pain meds.  I have talked with my Dr about this when I heard about it & she said it is the way it is going to be.  You can not get pain meds from 2 different Dr's anyway or you will be "red flagged" by all the pharmacies.  Be sure the Dr or Rheumy you sign with is one you like because switching Dr's will raise an eyebrow or two.  I was a part time, Pharmacy tech until I had to quit my job.  Hugs, Denise

The pain management clinic here has been doing that for a long time. Also, I know someone that had to sign an agreement to only get their drugs from one pharmacy, too.

I don't know what state you live in, but I know that a lot of docs in CA do that. My former GP in CA did it on a case by case basis, although he never asked me to sign anything. BTW-my rheumy never Rxd pain meds. I had to get them from my GP. I totally understand why you feel insulted, but there are a lot of docs who are afraid of being accused of over prescribing pain meds.

This is just MY opinion, but I think if doctors were a little more educated about pain meds and how everyone's pain tolerance is different, people like me wouldn't be walking around in agony. BTW-if you didn't know this, I am a recovering addict, and even though I have over 12 years sober, see a counselor that helps with my recovery, and see ANOTHER therapist for other issues, every doctor thinks that if they give me a narcotic, I'm gonna immediately abuse them. I've had dentists that have shown more intelligence when it comes to pain control (sorry about your dry sockets, BTW).

Sorry for the rant, but I am sick and tired of being punished for past indiscretions. I'd be more than willing to take drug tests, sign letters, or give them my right arm-I just want to have some pain relief! mad

It's a common practice in pain management clinics and it's spreading down to other docs that treat pain.
