I just saw my rheumy this morning and he has put me on Elavil. Does anyone take this? does it work? do you have any side effects? He says it is supposed to take the place of my trazodone since that doesn't seem to do anything, and I have to take one 50 mg pill at night with two 10mg Flexeril. Ha, he also says I can't do anymore "repetitive motion" exercises anymore because he thinks that is what caused my recent flare, and that I need to start doing yoga. That kinda seems like a paradox to me.

The elavil will help you to get a restorative sleep. If you are taking any pain medications, it helps them to work better. There can be a side effect of weight gain, but you are probably on a small dose so it probably wont effect you in that way.

Gentle stretching helps too. Plus the yoga will help you. Do you like to walk? Walking is a good exercise for fibro. Even if you only walk a little each day, it still helps. I try to walk every day and always feel good when I am done.

Hi Rache, I've been on 100 mg of elevil/amitriptyline for 11 yrs. I take it and 1 1/2 mg of xanax at bedtime. I don't know how well it works for sleeping since I have been on it for so long but I do believe it helps the pain. I tried cutting back on it last spring and went into a flare from hades for two weeks. I think that was the first part of June so we shall see what happens to my body as the weather gets warmer. I know I had never had a flare like that before and haven't had one since.

 

It does make me crave sweets and carbs but I have been lucky in not gaining a lot of weight on it.

Hi Rache,

Same story here, I was taken off Traz and put on Elevil, back in January.  I think it's helped.  I'm sleeping better and I do think it might be helping with pain.  I don't think it's like a magic bullet but I do think there's some improvement.

I HAVE been unfortunate enough to gain weight though.. about 20 pounds since I started.  So now I'm dieting YUCK!!!  But I'm doing the low carb thing and hoping to see some miraculous energy.  We'll see.  I was craving sweets like crazy.  So I'm avoiding sugar .. even artificial sugar. 

A lot of Fibro Family Members are on Elevil, it seems to be the drug of choice for this thing. 

I also take Tramadol for pain and I think it's OK.. not great but this some relief when I take it.

I was recently prescribed this as well. it works wonders. i am actually sleeping thru the night. i only take a 1/20 of the regular dose but it helps so much. I take that w Xanax at night, the Xanax puts me to sleep and Elavil keeps me asleep. I have been having much more vivid and strange dreams (always was a dreamer) so upping the dose soon to push thru the dream stage of sleep into the actual restful sleep stage. but so far so good.. =)

Elavil caused horrid leg pain for me. Soon as I stopped taking it, the pain went away.
