SMOKING! shocked

How did I make it this long? I've been through so much stress. I've moved across the country, lived with my parents for 3 months, lost my Grandma Toots, been turned down for disability, I've been dealing with relationship issues...the list goes on & on. But, I still haven't smoked-and believe me, I've wanted to! The other night, I even had a dream where I was smoking! smhair

But, somehow I haven't smoked since 8/28/08. FYI, for those of you who don't know my "story," I quit with the help of Chantix. It was like a miracle drug for me. But, it wasn't as easy as just taking a pill. There is a lot of determination and (I hate these words) will power involved. I only smoked for 12 years (how stupid was it to start smoking at age 25? LOL-yeah, rehab will make you trade one addiction for another), and I always hated that I smoked.

BTW-for all the smokers in the family, I know how hard it is to quit. It bugs the heck out of me when someone who has never been addicted to anything says, "Just quit." I want to scream, "Why didn't I think of that? Thank you so much! My life has changed because of you!" rolleyes No one knows what it is like unless they walk a day in your shoes. Besides, you have to be ready to quit, right?

Sorry for getting all up on my soapbox. blush Anyway, yay me! tongue

I just want to congratulate you again on not smoking. It is a hard thing to do and you did it.

I haven't been on the forum much because I started working, yeah, I got a job. One day at a time with that though. But I read your post and wanted to say that I am so proud of you and happy for you.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!  I quit 10 yrs ago, I know it's hard....I agree with "having to be ready to quit".

Congratulations, Casey!  I quit 30 years ago and I craved cigarettes for a while but now I can't stand to be around smoke or smell it!  So, you will have that to look forward to and you won't need will power to avoid smoking! 

 

I know you have been through a lot in the past nine months but you have still remained smoke-free.  I'm really proud of you!  It isn't easy.

I too quit with the help of Chantix. I quit 2-3/4 years ago and, like you, I feel as if Chantix is a miracle drug. For me, it took away the withdrawal effects, but I still had the habit to fight. Now, like Sherrine, I can't stand the smell of smoke, really irritates me and makes me wonder how in the world I smoked?
I'm very proud of you girl...it's a tough addiction to quit,

does anyone know how much Chantex cost? Washington State medicaid doesnt cover it, but with the prices of ciggs these days, I'm really sure Chantex will be cheaper eventually, and I'm sure my lungs will thank me for it. I'm starting that nasty plehm cough daily now, it's so gross and embarrassing. Thanks.

Hello Kitty,

Chantix is very expensive. The only reason I got it was because I was on a county program (not insurance) and Chantix was covered. I got a month's supply for $5, but I think it costs around $75-$100per month if you are paying out of pocket. I was supposed to take it for 3 months, but I only took it for 2 because...guess what? The county program decided not to cover it anymore! BTW-this all happened in Ventura County, CA.

Anyway, I guess you need to weigh the cost of how much you smoke each month to the cost of the drug. BTW-there are other, older drugs like Zyban that may work for you. FYI, Zyban is the same thing as Wellbutrin-and I think that comes in generic. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do! yeah

Oh! Thank everyone for your kind words. Now I've been smoke free for 9 months and 1 day! smilewinkgrin BTW-I cannot stand the smell of cigarette smoke now. When I smell it, I always think, "Did I use to do that?" And the other day my mom & I were out to lunch, and I couldn't figure out why I kept coughing. Well, my dad & I went to the same place for dinner a couple of days later, and I started coughing again. I realized that it was the smoke from the "smoking section" of the restaurant. BTW-yes, SC still has smoking sections-soon to be discontinued in January...FINALLY! :-)

Hey Kelly! Just wanted to add my hooray to the others!!! I quit Christmas Day of '07 -- had tried before a couple of times but went back to smoking -- don't know exactly what happened this time, but my mindset was just different.... I'm so proud of you, because I know how hard it is! Isn't it nice to know we don't smell anymore?!
