I was told by my Rhuemy that I have a heart murmur yet, I have NEVER been told this before and I have seen SOOO many doctors in the past few years.

Is heart murmur related to FM possibly?

Do any of you have one associated with your FM?

Hi Neeters and welcome. 

I have a heart murmur caused by mitral valve prolapse.  I was told as a child that I had probably had a strep infection that caused it but after testing as an adult I was told I was born with it.  It has NEVER caused me any problems and I am now 63.  I bike ride, hike, work out with weights, yoga and Pilate's on days that fibro is not a big problem.   Never ever a problem with my heart.  I read that other people with fibro have this also.  Your doctor will watch this I'm sure.  I never had any restrictions because of the murmur.  I do take antibiotics before dental work   This is recommended to avoid an infection which could spread to your heart.

You should probably see a cardiologist. You need to find out which valve it is and what you need to watch out for in the future. Many people have murmurs that never cause them any problems. I've read that mitral valve prolapse is common in people with fibro.

I have a heart murmur cause by a leaky aortic valve. I was born with it but it didn't start leaking until about 10 years ago. I will eventually need a new valve but hopefully not for a long time. My cardiologist made me aware of symptoms to watch for so that I don't ignore the symptoms of a failing valve. I also get echo cardiograms every year to check the valve. Otherwise, I can do anything I want without restrictions.

Puppylover, apparently, they've changed the recommendations about antibiotics before dental work and they no longer recommend the routine use. Most people with murmurs don't have to take antibiotics anymore. My previous and current cardiologist and my dentist told me this. The risks outweigh the benefits; more people have a problem from the antibiotics than get infections. Personally, I've chosen to take the antibiotics anyway.

Yes Dagger, I know they changed the recommendations concerning antibiotics.  I printed this for my dentists.  Both dentists said they would need it in writing from my doctor.  He would not do it.  He feels it is better for me to take the antibiotics even though I am very allergic to some of them. shakehead

 

I think Neeters should find out what is causing the murmur also.  Technology is so much better than it was years ago.

My middle son has mitral valve prolapse and went through some rough times as a teen when he was growing really fast and would pass out all the time but since he has been an adult he hasn't had any problems. His doctor told him he didn't have to take the antibiotics anymore when he went to the dentist but after having a patient in his 30s die on him in flight to the hospital from heart infection cause he went to the dentist he has changed his mind about taking the antibiotics before and after going to the dentist. He doesn't have fibro and I hope he doesn't get it. We didn't know he had the murmur til he was 14 and passed out the first time.

My family doctor has never heard a heart murmur when she has listened to my heart. It might be because when I go to her I usually have an upper respiratory infection.

On other hand, my pain doc, and knee doc have heard it. I did the stress test and the cardilogist found no heart murmur. Weird. I have two brothers who also have heart murmurs.

I have a heart murmur but mine is related to having a small body frame (only that part of me is small). Mine is considered harmless (I was tested).

I have a heart murmur and was born with it, I am now 67 and it is still there. I have seen a cardio, he said it is an innocent murmur. Two of my sisters have one also. The cardio said murmurs can be her hereditary.

I never read where FM can cause a heart murmur but have read where a lot Fmer's have MVP this is the murmur for them. I have mild mital regurgatation.

You should have a Echo done, that way they can determine where the murmur is coming from.

I wanted to add this but the site will not let me.

My G/P. my dentist and my Cardio say no to a/b's before dental work. The risk of a problem from the high dose of A/B'S far outweighs your chance of endocarditis, heart infection.

I just had two Molars pulled and my dentist gave me a print out of symtons of endocarditis. It usually happens in two weeks after dental work, but it an also come from the flu and many other things including infection elsewhere in your body.

I am glad I don't have to take them anymore, I had severe reactions 2 times from the high dose and every other time I was sick to my stomach for a week or longer.

A friend of mine had it and the cause was never found, she has MVP. she went to the E R feeling so sick, they found the infection, she was in the hospital 3 days and home on AB"S

My husband had 2 heart attacks and has 3 stents, his cardo told him no AB"s are needed, he just had 6 teeth pulled over a week ago.
