severe pain.. in my lower back???

ok so normally my pain is like achy or sharp and hot...

my back has been hurting bad for about 3 mos now.. some things i do i just have to bend over and try and make it stop.. its always my lower back..like right above the bum! when i wash dishes, fold clothes, sweep, mop, vaccuum.. it hurts bad..

well yesterday i woke up and it was ok.. just normal morning stiffness.. well i started packing lunches etc and my back began to hurt.. well as the day went on it hurt worse and worse.. by last night i was in tears trying to drive home..went home heating pad and pillow i went.. finally let up some.. went to bed.. woke up it felt ok.. as i moved around BAM.. severe pain again

its in my lower back..runs across and to my right hip.. its like that bum cheek is soo sore to sit on too.. its like right under my kidney area.. and it just hurts.. and hurts.. hot constant pain.. only way to describe it .. is like someone kicked me in my kidney area.. then just decided to stand on the spot and press down with their boot from time to time.. i cant twist .. it hurts to walk..

has anyone experienced this???

i have called my dr and i could not get in until tomorrow.. i have wonderful co workers and they are being so nice and helping me.. i do have some percocets at home but they put me out b/c they make me all spinny.. lol..

any suggestions??

Hi Pansy, So sorry you are experiancing lower back pain. You might have a disc problem in
your lumbar area that is causing nerve impingement. The fact that the pain is also in your
right bum cheek sounds like you also may have sciatica. I would call your doctor and tell
them your symptoms. You may have inflamation that also could be causing the problem.

Don't wait to call, It is important that you get this checked out!

ive called.. i have an appt.. it just hurts so bad.. today the pain is more in my lower back.. on the right side.. its hot and burnign but constant.. like theres a hot iron on the spot.. it runs down my right hip when i walk but if i twist it hurts in the back

Pansy, I do feel your pain. I have degenerative disc disease and have had back surgery,
I had an extreme case and surgery isn't always required. I do not want you to worry.
If your doctor thinks it is necessary he will want you to have a MRI. Sometimes rest and
physical therapy is adequate treatment.

Heat has always made me feel better, although your doctor may tell you to use a cold pack.
Hope your appointment is soon and you can find some pain relief!

I had a lot of low back pain over the years due to a curvature in my spine.  Using ice helped me.  Heat felt really good but it would relax the muscles so much that I would strain them again quite easily.  I tried chiropractics and that just made things worse for me.  Then I learned how to get in and out of bed and in and out of the car properly and, since then, I rarely have back problems.  This is what I do.

 

First of all, I do not sleep flat on my back because it makes my back hurt more.  I don't sleep on my stomach either.  I sleep on my sides with a pillow wedged behind my back.  This way, I can partially be on my back but have support.  That helps me.  I also get out of bed using a cane.  I roll on my side, draw my legs up in a sitting position so the legs are actually hanging over the floor, and then I push off with the cane.  Gravity will bring your legs down and you will be pulled to a sitting position without using your back muscles.

 

When getting in and out of a car, sit on the seat with your feet on the pavement.  Then, either using the seat or the steering wheel, swivel your feet into the car while keeping your back straight.  I buy cars with leather seats because they are slippery.  But, when I rent a car and get cloth seats I had to come up with another idea...and I did!  I get a garbage bag and a towel.  I lay the garbage bag on the seat and the towel over it.  Then I do the above.  The garbage bag and towel let  your rear end swivel like you were on a lazy susan!  LOL  Just reverse the above to get out of the car.

 

Don't use your back muscles when you are lifting things up.  Use your legs instead.  By doing the above things, my back rarely hurts me now.  I hope these suggestions will help you, too!

Oh Pansy, I know that pain well! As a general rule, burning pain generally means nerve involvement. In addition to the FM, I have a lumbar stenosis and it causes an impingement (back bones pushing on the nerves where they come out of your spinal column) on my right side. High doses of steroids will generally help get it under control more quickly. They come with a lot of not so nice side effects, but once or twice a year when it really flares I can't be choosy! I've found the most wonderful pain doc. She gives me injections every six to eight weeks into the nerve root that comes from the spinal column. The injection is Vitamin B-12, lidocaine (a numbing agent) and a steroid. For me they work great! I get 2-4 relatively pain free weeks, then the pain starts again, but it isn't as bad. I've been getting them for years. She injects multiple locations along that side of my spine. It's no treat, but it's effective.

I also use a TENS unit. It's one of my favorite "toys". I never leave home without it!

I've tried therapeutic massage, but all that did was make me want to scream and made the pain worse for a week or so.

Hope you find something that works for you. Also, just a tidbit of info; if you are using tylenol for that pain, it won't work nearly as well as regular aspirin or Advil. Aspirin and Advil are much better for inflammation. Tylenol is great for fevers!

Forgot this... find someone else to do the vacuuming. That is the worst thing for it.
