Hi, my name is Elizabeth. I am new to this group but not new to FMS/CFS. I am generally on the MS post as I also have a progressive neuro muscular disease as well. Both for over 20 years. My question is, does anyone out there in Fibroland have the inability to speak or eat due to the weakening and deterioration of the upper body muscles? Most folks that I know do not have severe FMS and am hoping someone on here is more like me for information sake. It's hard to know for me which is the Fibro and which is the other. I am 45, very knowledgeable of Fibro and MS but this symptom seems to elude most that are on the forums. Would appreciate any input as well as any help I could offer to anyone else.

Hi Elizabeth and welcome. There is no deterioration of muscles with fibro. Our muscles may become weaker due to inactivity cause of the pain we have when we use them. Now some of us do have problems with swallowing and choking but I don't believe it is due to deterioration of muscles.

I have fibro but not ms...on the other hand my sister in law has ms and not fibro. We often find that our pains are very similar. The only way she knows the difference is that she has her doctor tell her what is going on with her body. That might be your only solution also when it comes to your ms.

Yes, lately I have been so tired and weak. When I eat I feel the effort to move my tongue and jaw. It's seems as if even my tongue is cramping up on me these days. Since I have this problem I have not been eating my normal amounts. Hope that helps you on your quest. I would like to know if this is what your or anyone else is experiencing.

I have had fibro for 28 years and yes it has been progressive. I am in really in bad shape now, not being able to walk or stand for more than a few minutes. I am in pain most of the time and have to take pain meds to control the pain.

No, I don't have problems talking or swallowing, but my ability to sing has deteriorated over the past ten years. I used to sing very well and now my muscles don't allow me to carry my singing voice.

Thanks for the replies!!! My FMS has been progressive as well especially since beginning perimenopause. My ability to sing went first due to muscle weakness then my inability to talk and eat has progressed over the years. My muscles become so weak and tight that they are useless from the arms up. I now have to drink my food. Once perimenopause hit I must use a wheelchair outside the home and am mostly sedentary in the home. Linda what are you using for pain? Let me know if I can help anyone else.
