I take vitamin D3. It seems to give me more energy and a general sense of well being. I call it my happy pill. It really works. Especially if your levels were low.

I will tell you that since I added Vitamin D3 into my med mix, it has really helped my fibro pain alot. And like Karen its helped a little with my energy levels too. I am now taking 3400 units a day. I also have Crohns Disease and its helped a little there too. Good luck!

My doctor wanted to test my level of vitamin D but my insurance company will not pay for it for fibro, they will for other things but not that :( and it's like 150.00 to have it done. My doc told me to go ahead and take a D supplement, I have no idea what brand or dosage to take, what is everyone else taking? Is it exspensive?

Get it done for suspicion of osteoporosis or something or pay for the test. You should at lest get a break on the price and only have to pay what your insurance co would pay. I had mine tested and found out my level was 18. The old scale used to be 32 was normal. I understand Mayo is now recommending 40 to 80. You absolutely need the test to calculate how much you need to take.

How to calculate: for every ng/mL you are low, you need to add 100 units of D.

So for my level of 18, I needed to add 2000 units more than I was taking in my vitamin, calcium pill and the D I was already taking just to get to 38. Another 1000 would get me to 48, which is a much better number.

I will continue to get tested every time I get any other blood test because the level changes with the amount of sun you get. Not much D in food, so we need unscreened sun for a few minutes .... or pills.

I forgot to add that in only 1 day after taking the extra D my fibro pain dropped by half. It was like coming out of a flare.

I was very deficient in vitamin d, and I was given a prescription for 8 weeks of 50,000 taken once a week. After 12 weeks off, I had my levels retested, and had to do another round. Now I take 1,000 a day at my rheumy's suggestion. She doesn't want to test again until it has been a year, or as long as I'm doing okay.

I have read that 2000 units is a good dose for the average person, but I would ask for a D level every time I get a blood test from every doctor. I have a friend who has fibro and lupus and gets a D test every 3 months. You have to ask for it from most docs because it's not part of regular testing, like Chem 8 and such. Insurance should cover if there is a deficiency.

We can't store it and don't get much through food, not enough in daily vitamin, so in winter with little sun 90% are deficient, I read in a recent article.

I take 2000IU and do believe that it is a necessary addition to my Rx program. I was deficient and after reading about what a strong D presence can do for me, I take it.
