I was wondering if anyone has had a strange reaction while using Flexeril or even after stopping it.

I hurt my back during that nasty blizzard over the Christmas weekend. I tried hot showers, Icey Hot, stretching, my heating pad, nothing helped. It got so bad, I had to go to the dr. She gave me a rx for Flexeril. I read over the sheet that came w/ it. I took the med for a couple of days and it seemed to be helping, then I started to have a problem w/ a VERY dry mouth. I was always thirsty, nothing seemed to quench this thirst.

Finally, a light bulb went on in my head... Maybe it's the Flexeral. I reread the sheet. There it was, DRY MOUTH! Ok that was it, and I stopped the medicine. When I say dry mouth, I'm talking my teeth were sticking to my lip, no saliva to swallow, eating and talking were too difficult. My tongue was so dry, cracked and coated. It took several days to get some real saliva in my mouth, but now that is better.

The really weird thing is my voice has changed. I sound like a cross between Talullah Bankhead and Beatrice Arthur. I've had several phone calls recently where the caller will ask, 'Alice??' When I say yes, I get 'Are you alright?'

This is the only thing different that I've taken in ages, just wondering if anyone else has had this kind of reaction. I sincerely hope this isn't permanent, it's just a little too weird.

Hi Alice, so sorry about your back!

I take Flexeril when I'm flaring. It never gave me dry mouth to that extent...I drink lots of water throughout the day though. At the first sign that my mouth feels dry, I'll suck on a piece of hard
candy...that always gets the saliva going for me.

Your description of your voice cracked me up, I got a strange visual of a mix of both ladies.

Hope your back and the rest of you feel lots better:)

Hello Alice,

I sure do hope that your back gets better soon. I hurt mine about a week ago and suffered for a few days, but I think it was only a pulled muscle because it is better now. But my hips give me a lot of problems at times. Well, all the time, but I try not to think about it.

I truly hope that you feel better soon.

PS My doctor put me on flexeril, but I don't like it.  It makes me way drowsy.  I was taking soma which I believe is a much better medication for muscle relaxers.

I have to agree with Karen Soma is and works much better than Flexeril. Other than my PCP all the other doctors that I have seen want to give flexeril and make it a point to tell me that they do not prescribe Soma. I even had one tell me that Soma would be banned.

I hope you get some relief for your back soon

I just realized that I didn't answer your original question.  I can't remember if I had any reaction as it was so long ago

Hi Alice, I used to take flexeril and I do remember the dry mouth, but I got it approved at work to have some water at my station because of it. I have a naturally deep voice so I guess I never noticed any changes in my speech. I hope your voice gets back to normal soon and your back feels better.

Thank you all for your thoughts.  I normally have my water bottle w/ me at all times. I drank so much water, I sloshed w/ every step I took. I try to keep some cough drops in my pocket at all times.

I was given Soma yrs ago from a different dr. I never had a problem w/ it. The dr thought it would make me sleep at night, not really, but I didn't have an side effects from the Soma. The Flexeril knocked me out w/i 10 min after I took it for the first 3 days. After that, it didn't make me sleepy.

My dr gave me this med b/c the pain patches she gave me a few yrs ago did not help me, they would never stick to me properly, so they were not effective.

GSD girl, what was the reasoning behind the refusal for rx of Soma? I hadn't heard anything about them that was causing a problem.

I have been having a lot of problems w/ my hips lately, too. I hope your pain goes away very soon, Karen.

Shirley, I'm glad that your bosses were understanding about having water near you. That would have been so hard w/o the water.

Robin, I thought I remembered you taking the med. Glad it isn't that bad for you. Yeah, this voice could scare babies and small animals.  devil    Hopefully, it will go away very soon.

One other thing I've noticed lately is I'm getting terrible heartburn. Since I eat the most bland diet, I was wondering if it could also be due to the medicine.

Alice, I can't remember if I already posted this but one doc (pain management doc) was even on a committe to do away woth soma.  They have all said it was highly addictive ...............I go for weeks and don't take it at times.  And what isn't addicting???  Even tylenol sinus can be, my friend was.    There was something about high school kids O.D.ing on it and I think that has something to do with it also.

I think they always get rid of or change what works just because of a certain segment out there abusing.

Hi Alice, I have acid reflux but I have never associated getting it with having taken flexeril. That might be something to ask the pharmacist about and see if that is one of the side effects of flexeril. Please let me know what you find out.
