Okay, Nana. Are you sitting down? I have Crohn's disease and would get canker sores along the sides of my tongue, the inside of my cheeks, and just a general soreness to the tongue...like it had been burned. I tried everything and felt, like you do, that it was possibly an infection. I got thinking about what kills bacteria and thought of alcohol.
Now, I wasn't going to put rubbing alcohol in my mouth so I did the next best thing...rum! I do not drink but I had rum in the house for company. I put some straight rum in my mouth and it burned terribly but for only a handful of seconds. I swished it around my mouth and spit it out in the sink. My mouth tingled strongly but a little later I noticed that it didn't hurt so much. So, about 12 hours later, I did that again. It still burned but not as badly. I did this twice a day for two days and haven't had a problem since.
Because it worked great for me, I used this with my children. When they would get a painful canker sore, I would dip a Q-Tip in some straight rum and lay it on the canker sore. I only would have to do this two or three times before the pain went away and it started to heal. The kids knew it would burn but would come to ME to have me do this. They knew it would get rid of it fast. This also shows you it's not unbearably uncomfortable if I had elementary age children asking for my "cure"! The pain from the canker sore was worse than the burning sensation from the rum.
So, you might want to consider this. There was another member that had a very sore tongue and tried everything to help it and nothing worked. I posted this, she tried it, and it cleared it up for her. I'm not a doctor but am just telling you what I did and how it helped me. I see you had a trach so you might want to bounce this off your doctor. But, if you are allowed to drink alcoholic beverages and gargle with Listerine, then this shouldn't hurt you.
