Today is my 3rd day taking Elavil. I have had situations where I am quick to anger. Normally (before Elavil) I feel a lead up time to anger. But on Elavil, there is no awareness that I am about
to explode, and it's over small things that normally would not make me angry at all. The outbursts are almost Tourette's-like -- using the F-word, & that's not normal for me at all. I don't think this is the drug for me at all. I see that angry outbursts & irritability are on the list of side effects. Has anyone else had this problem.

I know I would stop them. Read through this link...especially side effects.

I haven't heard of this before. It is interesting that it would cause such a side effect. I would contact the doctor and let him/her know what is going on. It is clear that this isn't the medication for you. Sometimes it takes awhile to find what is right. I am glad that you recognized it when you did.
Good luck finding what is right for you.
Hugs, Karen

This is the first time I've ever taken a psychiatric kind of drug, & I realize there is an adjustment period, but I think I would rather have to deal with fibro than be like this. I will take a half pill to wean myself off, & talk to doc on Monday.

Irritability is one thing, but if it's really making you lash out with no warning, that's scary! I get that a lot of side effects have to be waited out but I certainly wouldn't want to deal with that......

I had a similar problem with Adderal (for fatigue and depression). Every afternoon I would just suddenly explode over something, and then it would be gone. Very strange. But I guess when we're messing with our brains, anything can happen, unfortunately. One thing I've learned over the years is that I can't take the "normal" dose of meds. If you're getting side-effects, cut back on the med and see if that helps. But there's always a transition period when you start up a new med.

I'm very sorry to hear you are having those side effects. I'm at the end of my own rope so I don't have a lot of advice for you.
I've tried so many different meds and I'm just tired of the battle. They all have side effects. I don't like who I am when I'm on the meds; I don't like my life off the meds. I just want to give up. It's too overwhelming.
I'm just in such a low and dark place right now -- just getting through every hour is a battle in itself.

CrushFibro I'm sorry you are feeling low. I am listening to my ears ring very high pitched right now. It's about
to drive me nuts! (& don't say, "short trip!") because I know that! lol
I'm not really sure I want to try another antidepressant. I'm sure my doc will be happy to call in a new one, but it is so frustrating. Not sure if it's worth it. I have been reading up on magnesium. Vitamins are pretty interesting, and it gives me hope to try to learn more. You never know when you will find a key bit of information that might help. I think the Flexeril is helping, but I don't want it to be a longterm thing either. Well, I wish I could say something to help you feel better!!!

I heard back from the Rheumy's office -- they said we'll discuss possibility of trying other anti-depressants (if needed) at my next visit, which is only about
a week and a half away. I think I am going to pass. I have been taking the Tramadol and a Flexeril and hour or two before bed, and it is helping a lot. I'm not perfectly pain free and dancing ballet in the living room, but I'm not in extreme torture and at least for now, I can get some things done around the house.

Had a similar problem on Cymbalta, but the amitriptilyn is fine, for me.

Like Myself 09, I had a similar problem when I tried Cymbalta (then Bowels On Fire - what a charming drug). Amitriptilyn caused tachycardia instead and I only took it twice bec of that (and clutched my chest for an hour, waiting for my heart to stop racing).
I am on a very, very, very low dose of cipralex instead and think that it helps.
