Hello everyone, sorry I haven't posted in the past week, we have been doing our crazy Christmas travelling. I hope everyone had a great Christmas. So my exhusband sent my daughter up to visit with headlice which I discovered this morning. I got a bottle of rid shampoo and did both of us right away since I have been sharing a bed with her. Of course after I do it I read online that rid is only twenty percent effective. I am desperate for a recommendation of something that will work. I spent all day cleaning my fiances grandmothers house and I do not have the energy to go home and clean mine so I am hoping for something I can pick up on the way home, march us both in the bathroom and take care of the problem for good.

We struggled alot with head lice when dtr was younger. Rid was useless. What finally really got rid of them was anise oil diluted w/ oil (go online for dilution instructions-straight anise oil will burn scalp) leave on for 10-15 min and wash with Dawn dish soap, must be repeated 7 day s later to kill hatched eggs.

If you cannot find that (we ordered it online) try oliveoil, it smothers the bugs, but must be repeated also. I wish you the best, especially picking nits out!!!!

Ugh! I had this problem in high school, got them from a classmate who "borrowed" my brush without permission. Of course, my hair was super long then, and I refused to cut it, so it was a real problem. We used everything we could think of, and finally used canola oil and used it several times. If you pour it all over your daughter's head (over the tub!), then use a fine-tooth comb, it should help. You will have to do it more than once, though. I think we did it once a day for a week...

Well I found something at Walmart that got rave reviews called Lice Freee. Its a spray you spray in and let air dry and its supposed to kill lice and eggs by the time it dries. I may have over sprayed and we both have very greasy hair tonight but she has stopped complaining about the itching so I am hoping this takes care of the problem. We haven't been home in a week and she hasn't been here since August so I don't think I need to clean to much. I am making both of us sleep on towels and will wash the bedding tomorrow.

My daughter got lice from sharing a school locker in elementary school.  After I found out the other child was sent home with lice, I started checking but it was too late...all three of my kids had lice.  I called the pediatrician and they ordered a prescription lice shampoo which I used and I also went through their hair myself, picking out the nits.  It took me about 45 minutes per child and I did this twice a day.  Of course all the bedding was washed in hot water and there is a furniture spray that I bought and I sprayed all the furniture. 

 

Well, the lice kept coming back and I was slowly losing my mind!  It turns out they can live on stuffed animals and all my kids had a bazillion of them.  Once I threw out the stuffed animals and de-liced things for the one millionth time, we never had a problem again.

 

I'm sorry you are having to deal with this.  If you are anything like me, it's driving you bonkers.  But, you will get it under control.

Its hard to not get the warning about head lice with most of my grandchildren in public school or daycare. We put several drops of tea tree oil in our shampoos. I had the itchy head thin going on a year ago and dyed my hair which killed them and a week later I did another chemical treatment but that was an extreme.

All I have to do is hear head lice and my head instantly gets itchy.

Make sure you dry all the bedding and stuffed animals on high for 30 minutes-this assures DEATH to those lil buggers

Good luck. Repeat that treatment in 7 days or you will have to go thru the whole thing again!!!

We stuck all of my stuffed animals and bedding in big black trash bags and sealed them good. Getting the bugs in the dark and away from their host will kill them deader than a doornail. Just make sure to leave the stuff in the bags for a week.

My son and DIL use tea tree oil; don't know the amounts but I'm sure you can look it up online.

Bless your heart! Years ago my daughter come home from school with them...I had never had them and did not realize what a nightmare I was dealing with as a single parent...it was absolutely horrible! I got them awful as well.

At first I did not realize after the RID you had to one by one pic out ALL the NIT's. My hair is long and dark and it was extremely difficult to get them ALL out of my own hair. I remember washing the sheets and blankets as it was winter from both beds daily....Bagged up all the stuffed animals or anything I thought may harbor the nasty critters.

When had just moved into a new home and a month after we moved in I was dealing with this and washing our sheets and blankets daily. The washing machine was defective and the hose came off the back of the washing machine and flooded our new home. So then due to the extensive damage we had to go to a hotel.

Now you know as well I do, hotels do not always wash the sheets daily much less blankets and comforters. I was afraid to tell them as I feared they would say we couldn't stay there. So I knew I had to do something to ensure they were washed daily. So I drenched the sheets and blankets with water every morning to make sure they were changed. I am sure they were mad and were glad to see us leave...

My parents and daughter would spend hours pulling NITS out of my hair not only was it long but very thick. I was ready to shave both our heads it was so hard to deal with....

Someone suggested putting mayo on my hair that it would smother the pesty critters. My daughter did not have them anymore but I made her did it just in case. I do not remember how long we let it sit in our hair but I was beyond dealing with this nightmare and wanted to end this lovely chapter of our live.

At the time is was no laughing matter but now looking back it is quite comical all we went through. If I ever any hear someone mention lice I RUN away!!!!!!
