Hi All

I havent yet officially been diagnosed with FM, but it seems I do fit the endless list of complaints! I have been through endless tests, xrays, MRI's, blood tests, physio etc etc. Besides costing a small fortune I am now beside myself that nobody can come to the bottom of this. Just today I saw my GP with my excruciating lower back pain, of course he looked at me with the 'not you' again look! :-) I have asked them all, are you sure I dont have this or the other dreaded disease but to no avail. My husband is getting very impatient with me especially with the amount of money we spend on the tests!! I sit here now and can hardly move my lower back is soooo painful!! I even asked my GP if I dont have ovarian cancer as iI have googled everything!! (not a good thing to do if you want to sleep at night!) He just dismisses me probably thinking I am a complete hyperchondriac! Well thank goodness for theis forum...I am not alone and not imagining it all!...I am from Cape Town by the way! :-)

Hi, MishSA, and welcome!  I'm so glad you found us and joined the family!  There are still some doctors out there that don't know much about fibro or they think this is all in your head.  Nice, huh?  Nope, it's not all in your head.  It's difficult to diagnose because all of our tests come back just fine.  Plus, there is no test for fibro.  The symptoms of fibro are like those of other illnesses so those illnesses have to be ruled out first.  It sounds like this is being done.  BUT you do want to make sure your doctor treats fibromyalgia patients.  You need to flat out ask or you are wasting your time. 

 

Be sure to read Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there.  Good starting links are called Symptoms, What Else Could It Be, and A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia.  You just might see yourself there. 

 

I have some good ideas for back pain but I can't open the folders on my computer this morning.  But, when I do, I'll post these.  This has helped me a lot.

Thanks so much for your response! I had a look throught he material on Fibro101 and it really is very interesting and helpful! A few years ago a GP that I saw thought that my problems were due to a condition called Fibromyalgia, I had not then heard of it and so I googled it - and it seemed like the symptoms all matched mine. Then I was slightly sceptical as it was all so up in the air. My new GP doesnt seem to know much about this so he kind of brushes it off when I mention it to him. I have heard about a doc close to where I live that does treat this condition and I am planning on seeing him. It is sooo hard when nobody understands your pain, especially at work! There are still one or 2 tests I would like to have but according to my doc this morning he didnt think it was necessary, he juts recommended mor physio - which helps temporarily for me. I have been through the symptoms list and it is as if I am ticking them off one by one!I am so glad I found this site, it it is Fibro that I have at least I will be understood!!!

Hi Michele,

I am glad that this site has helped you to feel so not alone. It is hard when nobody listens or understands what you are going through. But know here that we do.

I hope you get to feeling better soon. Exercise does help, but you have to go slow. I find walking to be wonderful.

I hope that you are having a good day. Keep posting, and know that you aren't alone in this anymore.

I hope you find the right Dr. and get to the bottom of it soon. It can be a very lengthy and difficult process.
I just finally got an official dx myself.
I agree with Sherrine and wish I'd done that myself, just right off the bat ask if they dx and treat fibro, if not, or if they scrunch up their face, chances are, they don't belive in it. No point even wasting your time.
I called a Dr's office today to see if the Dr there treats chronic fatigue syndrom and fibro, and was told in a round about way that I'd be wasting my time coming there. Finally I got what she was trying to say and said "oooh, you mean he doesn't believe in it?" She said "exactly, I was hoping you'd catch that, because I'm not really supposed to just come out and say it" I thanked her for warning me.

Hi Michelle, welcome to the fibro family...home of the caring, sharing fibromites.

A combination of heat, gentle stretching and walking help me out. I also make time for deep breathing, visualization and meditation...it is a great stress reliever. Soak in a warm bath when you are able...use microwave moist heat pads...they're great!

Good luck in search of a dx...be prepared as it does take some time. We are here for you :) Glad you joined us...post often, we care!

Hi All

Thanks for the responses, it is much appreciated! I had a particularly bad weekend with pain! On Friday after work I got home, lay on my bed and sobbed, so ,my husband took me to another doctor, this time one that does understand Fibromalgia. The pain in my lower back is excruciating and is referring itself to the lower front part of my groin - this is why I am so concerned that it may be my ovaries! My doc told me to keep my appointment with the gynae but he still feels that my pain is being referred from my lower back - does anyone else have this problem? I cannot sit for 5 minutes and the pain goes from my back, around the front and down my legs! I really am beside myself!

Mich, I get that.  I can have pain in my hips and lower back.  Sciatic pain usually runs from the butt down the back of the leg but I get pain also in the groin, too.  It goes from the upper groin to about halfway to my knee.  It's always good to get things checked out but try not to worry so much.  We can conjure up the worst case scenerios soooo easily and the stress makes our pain worse.

Welcome, I am so sorry it is taking so long for a diagnosis. Very frustrating and scary pain. Even if i is determined that you don't have Fibro, you will be welcome here, and let us know how you are doing.
