mammogram on Monday- oh joy

I am scheduled for my mammogram on Monday, dreading it.  They usually find something that they want to redo it over and over.  I hate when others say just get it over with, it hurts, but you have to have it done.  they don't have fibro, they can't imagine the pain afterwards for several days.  and yes, I am well endowed, so there is alot to pinch and flatten.  How does everyone else cope with getting these done?

I well understand how you feel about the mammo, I don't like them either. I have gotten physically ill from the pressure. They had to bring me to a sofa and help me lay down. I wish I could go w/o the d**n test, but w/ my family history, I don't dare. Breast cancer runs in my mother's side of the family. Both of my mother's aunts died from it. My mother had it and we were so lucky they found it in time. I took her for the surgery, brought her home w/ me when she was released and took care of her physically for wks afterward. I took her for chemo and radiation. It knocked her out, but she was the victor. I was blessed to have her for 13 more yrs. Her surgeon told me that my 2 sisters and I were to be vigilant. I dread the mammo, but I dread the thought of cancer even more. I take Advil before I go in and my DH takes me for the test. I won't drive w/ Advil in my system.

I will be thinking of you on Monday, praying it goes well on all counts - little pain and no re dos. Try to be gentle w/ you for days after. Rest when you get home. If you take pain med, maybe that would help at that time. If you don't take anything, maybe a cpl of Advil. I know this hurts, but hopefully this check up will keep you here w/ your family and this family for many yrs to come!

I have to get them all the time too. I had a scare once and had to have one operated on. I don't like them either, they are uncomfortable, but may have saved my life. Think happy thoughts. Hopefully you will get a good technician. That makes a huge difference.

We will be thinking about you. Let us know how it goes.

I have not had one in 9 years the last one hurt so bad I actually cried and wouldn't let hubby touch me for weeks. Are all the tech's mean is that why it hurts so much? I bet if a man had to put his jewels in a vise that they would be more sympothetic.

I have a mammmogram done each year and there were years that they would have me have them done twice a year. This past mammogram was the first in a very long time that I didn't have to go back for an ultra sound.
In the past...I've had a biopsy and a titanium breast marker placed in my left breast. My breasts get lumps called fibroadenomas and they are rare for women past 50...luckily, no cancer.

Most everytime I have a mammo they want to do a redo...I do let them know about my conditions and they seem to care and apologize. Sometimes my breasts hurt more than other times following a mammo. The women's center where I go tries to make the experiance spa like...women sitting around in stylish pink and black robes and a juice bar.

I know they are uncomfortable and I'm well-endowed, too.  But, once it's over I don't have any problems with pain.  You might want to try a different place to have your mammogram.  Up north, my first mammogram was horrible, I got really light-headed, and I had bruises at the top of each breast for over a week. 

 

The place I'm going to in Florida is terrific, thorough, and minimal pain.  I've never had a re-do either because she is so thorough when doing the mammogram in the first place.  I think the worst part is getting part of your armpit in the machine, too.  Now that really is uncomfortable!

 

This will be over soon for you so try not to stress too much over it.  The extra pain the stress will cause isn't worth it.

Thanks everyone, I know it is worth the pain and discomfort.  I am in a small flare right now, so that is adding to the pre-stress of tomorrow.

Yay, its over, the tech gal was very nice, and let me be in control to how much she tightened the clamps, my pain pill is wearing off now, and yes, I do have alot of pain, especially in my back, but really feel it all over. But its done, hopefully no call backs, Thanks eveyone-

So glad it's over!! Wow, I like your technician, they should all be that way. I also felt the pain in my back, I think it was from leaning over and all the stress you're feeling at the time. Can you take another pain pill now and head off to bed?

I hope you get some well deserved rest tonight and feel just great come morning. Most importantly, I hope you get GOOD news from this test.    yeah

I just got a call back today. I have to go an have a re-do on the right side. This is the first time I have had a call back like this. I am trying not to worry. I know they have said before that my breast have fibrous tissue. I am hoping this is all there is to it. I am still sore from 2 weeks ago. (I do not do the re-do until the 15th, so hopefully the soreness will be gone by then.)

PLEASE try not to worry about it. The do re-do's all the time for technical things or the doctor wants another view of something that turns out innocent.

I'm sorry Mrsppmrxky, I will keep you in my prayers. Half of mine I have had to have redone, and even ultrasounds done. So I know that waiting can be hard, and the re-do's are painful. Still feeling the pain today.
