This has probably been discussed before, but since I'm relatively new to the site, I hope the "veterans" will bear with me...

Has anyone tried Dr. R. Paul St. Armand's protocol for fibromyalgia that involves taking the supplement guaifenesin?  If so, would you be kind enough to share your experience with me?

Hi kimliz. I tried it several years ago for a brief period of time when I was somewhat newly diagnosed and desperate for a "cure." I found that it didn't do anything for me but upset my stomach.

I haven't seen any reputable (at least, what I consider "reputable") sources that tout guaifenesin as a treatment for fibromyalgia. Also, now the general consensus among the medical establishment is that fibro is a result of a central nervous system pain processing issue, not originating in the muscles. There is a disclaimer at the bottom of the article that states (and I'm paraphrasing) that there are some fibro patients who have reported improvement with guaifenesin, but the author wondered if that was perhaps due to better breathing, resulting in better sleep.

Thanks so much for your reply, and for posting the link...very interesting reading.  On Amazon, so many reviewers of Dr. Armand's book said that his protocol worked for them, but I still didn't want to waste my money on what amounted to snake oil.  Also, I figured that if there were a cure, even if it involved a difficult regimen, most people on here would be feeling better.  Too bad it doesn't appear to be true... rolleyes

Well it worked for me. And I was virtually crippled. And I'm a pilot and can't take SSRI's if I want to work. I had also tried loads of other stuff so I don't think its placebo. And if I stop I get worse. It ain't snake oil. It was used in the 17C to treat rheuamtism. Rheumatism/fibromyalgia - same symptoms! Keep an open mind.

The hard part I found with it is avoiding all the sylacilates. They are in practically everything. I got really disappointed at the end of the book when I read about avoiding them. Mabprem, I am glad that it has worked for you.  And welcome to the fibromyalgia forum...

I am not yet a patient of Dr. Saint Armand. But I have several friends that suffer from fibromyalgia who have tried his treatment and are his patients. All of them have had great success. Since I had all the symptoms of fibromyalgia I decided to trythe guifenicin just to see if it worked. It has actually works remarkably. On days that I forget to take it I return to serious pain. I am contacting Dr. Armand to get in to be seen as his patient as soon as possible. My insurance recently approved his consult. He is not only a doctor, endocrinologist but he also suffers from fibromyalgia Himself. It is one of the reasons why I even considered trying something that didn't seem to originally make very much sense. There are a few people that I know that won't even contact him for treatment. I can't help but suspect that There r some people that rather stay on opiate pain killing drugs then try something and get off the pain medications. There's a lot of drug addiction out there.
The way I felt was I will try anything if it might help and certainly something that has minimal side effects and is available over-the-counter. This man has nothing to gain from this treatment approach.

Different treatments work for different people as we are all different Jude. I am glad the guifenisen worked for you. That is awesome, but from what I read for it to work you have to avoid silacytes (sp) and that is nearly impossible. They seem to be in everything. That is why I have not tried it. I did take Musinex, and my muscles felt better. I believe that there is guifenisin in it.

Welcome to the forum and I wish you the best. But please realize that different things work for different people, and if some use pain medications that work, more power to them. But yes, sadly there is a lot of drug addiction out there like you say. I think it is all within the individual as to whether they are just dependent or get addicted.
