Anti-Inflammatory and Fibro

I’ve used ibroprofen for firbo for years (I never got good results with things like panadol and mersyndol, but nurofen plus works well), and have recently been put on Celebrex, which I supliment with panadine.

 

I’ve got a lot of relief from the Celebrex (tried to come off it two days ago… and yes, it really, REALLY works… Bit of luck it will kick back in nice and fast…) but frankly I don’t understand why I get so much relief from an anti-inflammatory when Fibro isn’t meant to involve any inflammation.

 

I asked my doctor, and she basically said “because it does,” then gave me a look like I was an alien for wanting to understand why something worked. So I googled it. Everything I found said NSAID don’t work for Fibro because there’s no inflammation… But then it goes on to say that Celebrex is regularly prescribed. I don't get it.

 

Anyone have any insight?

My first pain management doc believed that fibro is an inflammatory disease, which would suggest that it might fall into an autoimmune disorder type thing.

I know that many of us have been misdaignosed with lupus, RA and other AI disorders. I think alot of symptoms point to an AI component, the sensitivity to smells, lighs, noise, the pain, the fatigue etc

If it helps and does more good than harm, I would use it. I would want to know why, but ultimately if something helped me that much, I would take it

I'm definatly taking it... My little expiriment with coming off it prooved it works wonders.

I hate not knowing why/how things work though, lol. I'm a bit like a kid in that regard, if I don't understand somthing I ask why until I either get an answer or someone throws a shoe at me, lol.

I have been taking Ibuprofen for 20+ years.  It works well for me but I know it doesn't for  many with fibro.  Like so many other drugs, it doesn't lose effectiveness and isn't addicting.  I worry about ulcers but so far have dodged the bullet.  I tried an SSRI/benzo combo a few years ago and the side effects were worse than the disease, plus withdrawing was a nightmare.

I don't know why doctors are so quick to assume that just because Ibuprofen works we must not have fibro.  It is a painkiller...used for headaches, menustral cramps, toothache, fever and flu aches and pains.  None of those things are inflammatory yet it relieves the pain.

If it does the job I would just take it and not analyze why.  So little is known about fibro, including what causes it.

I think why I'm so frustrated is that I've always been given a hard time by doctors for opting for natural treatments. Virtually every GP has scoffed at me saying, “They can’t even tell you WHY it works, so you shouldn’t trust it,” or something similar. (Meanwhile my naturopath has always been able to explain the hows/whys of everything she’s told me to try…)
And now they’re turning around and saying, “We don’t know how it works, but just have to trust it,” and somehow trying to sell it as better researched and understood than the natural stuff.

I think it’s a personality clash between me and the medical industry, and me and Fibro (you’d think we’d learn to play nicely after 15 years… lol).
