Sometime Life just makes you take a nap

Quite a day today was. I woke up at 5 am getting "SIREN" alerts from my workplace telling me that although the place would be open anyone who felt it wasn't safe to drive to work in the snow should stay home. I'm lucky that I have a laptop from work so I can work from home.

I got my laptop up and running and connected with my work's computer. I worked for an hour when the power went off at my house. As the house got colder I snuggled under a blanket with my Kindle reading and getting sleepier. Ended up deciding that I might as well take a nap. I slept for nearly four hours!

Ended up the power was off for 9 hours. I hate having to take PTO when I could be saving it for vacation, but I'm blessed to have it available. I had a nice quiet day at home with my kids. We all read and napped. I fired up my own laptop and watched with my son, his Netflix DVD "The Tree of Life" and as it was minutes from the end the power was back on.

Would they take that day off your time?  You were working and, though no fault of your own, the power shut off.  Your workplace did give you the option to not come to the office for safety reason.  You did try to keep working, too.  I would let them know what happened so you don't lose that day!

 

But, it sure sounded like a nice day!  :-)

i'm glad you enjoyed the time with your kids...they probably enjoyed it as much...you all had fun and got some rest too. Some days are just meant to be. :-)

Maybe you won't have to take a PTO day yeah Good Luck!

Follow up: On Thursday I was working from home again. This time the power stayed on. I decided to work a bit longer and ended up putting in 11 hours. It is a lot easier to put in a long day when I'm sitting at home on a laptop, LOL.

I wasn't sure that my supervisor would allow the extra time since I hadn't gotten advance approval. I sent her an email letting her know that I'd worked two hours the day the power went out, and three extra hours the next day. I asked if I could stay an hour late today then I'd only have to take two hours of my PTO. She said she thought that'd be fine.

A little while later she came by my cube with the other supervisor and said that I could leave on time and still count my week as a full forty hours worked!! YAY!!

I love my job!
