I think that I have Fibromyalgia and I don't know how to get help

I am a 33 year old female and for the past five years I have been dealing with chronic pain. I have been tested for about everything under the sun and the tests always come back normal. This started with extremely painful menstrual cycles and has lead into flu like symptoms for 2 to 2 1/2 weeks every month. The last diagnosis I recived was from my gyno. She said that she 90 percent sure that I have endometriosis, but I don't understand how she can some to that assupmtion since I have never had a laprascopy? During this last five years I have also drastically lost weight. I now weigh about 110 lbs and do not starve myself. There are just times that I cannot eat due to the fact that I feel so ill. It usually starts with exteme pelvic pain and wears down to flu like symptoms and then all over muscles aches. None of my docs seem to want to help. I think that they just think I am seeking pain meds which is not true. I do not want to be on pain meds all of the time but I am also a very young girl and have a five year old daughter who is very active and I do not want to live like this anymore. She does not understand why her mommy is always sick and niether do I. I just want answers and treatment and I don't know where else to turn to?!

Hi, Shorttyt, and welcome!  Well, you could have both fibro and endometriosis.  I'm not a doctor so this is just a guess.  My daughter has endometriosis.  She was losing a lot of weight, was nauseated a lot and would vomit a lot.  She would be fine one minute and nauseous the next. 

 

She went to many different doctors, even a gastroenterologist, and since she was young, they told her it was all in her head.  She came home in a bucket of tears not knowing what else to do.  I told her she had tried all the doctors but not the gyno so I sent her to my excellent doctor.  He suspected endometriosis, did the outpatient surgery for it, and she now takes birth control pills to help her keep it under control.  I, personally, would find another gyno if I were you if they suspected endo and did nothing about it. 

 

Fibro will make you feel like you have the flu and you will have chronic pain.  The tests do come back "normal" too so that is a dilemma.  So, you could have two things going on. 

 

I suggest you find a good gynecologist and see if you really do have endometriosis.  Get that taken care of.  Then, find a good GP, Internist, or Rheumatologist to check you for fibro.  Many here use a rheumatologist.  I have both an Internist and a rheumy to help me.  Be sure to ask if they treat fibro patients before you make the appointment for the fibro doctor of your choice.  There are still doctors out there that don't believe fibro exists!  Crazy, huh?

 

Be sure to read Fibro 101...the second thread on the forum.  There are links to good info about fibro and you will learn a lot there.  Good starting links for you are called Symptoms, What Else Could It Be, and A Thorough Explanation of Fibromyalgia.  You just might see yourself there.  But, read through the entire thread.  There is a ton of info to help you.  Knowledge is power and we do have to be our own advocates with this illness.

Thank you for your input. The reason that my gyno gave for not testing or treating the endo is that I still want another child very soon and she did not want to do anything to compromise me concieving again. I did choose not to take birth control for this reason. Although I do believe that her assumption about the endo is correct I also believe that there is something else going on.

In my mind there has got to be another reason for a active 33 year old female to feel this sick all of the time and I just want to get this problem taken care of. It just breaks my heart to tell my five year old daughter mommy can't play today she is not feeling well.

Also, she has been reacting to my pain by telling me that she is sick or not feeling good either on almost a daily basis and I can't have her doing this so I have been trying my best to hide some of my symptoms from her but there are days that it definitley gets the best of me.

They do tend to copy us don't they??? I really hope that you feel better soon. Having a child is wonderful, and I hope that you can enjoy it to the fullest.

I have a friend whose teen age daughter had endometriosis.  She had the scraping done so it wouldn't progress quickly.  She did go on birth control pills until she married and wanted to start a family.  My daughter was told the same thing.  To take the pills and stop them when you want to get pregnanat. 

 

A few years later, the neighbor's daughter got married, stopped the pills and got pregnanat with twins!  Then a couple of years after that she had another set of twins.  All girls!  So you can have it taken care of and still have children. 

 

I'm definitely not an expert on this.  I don't have this problem.  But, if it's making you sick and you are losing weight it might be even harder to get pregnant.  You want to be as healthy as possible when you do get pregnant, it seems to me.  Healthy Moms make healthy babies.  This is just my humble opinion but I sure would ask again about it if you are sick and losing weight.  That's not good.

I have just quickly run through the notes here and a couple questions of inflammation of course run through my mind. As a Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, every time someone talks about constant pain/inflammation or the all so common "fibromyalgia" today, acid intake is always first and foremost on my mind. As a woman, I am very sure your gyno has described "prostaglandins" within your conversations about endo. There are several kinds, some good like "flax oil" and bad like virtually all acids from sugars to aspartame to diet cok to white bread. Also, in many cases, you will find if you ingest soy "unfermented" more than once every blue moon or so, you could find yourself in a world of pain as soy just loves to mess with hormones especially estrogenic efffectual hormones both in men and women. Bottom line is, alkali foods like fruits and veggies are (anti-inflammatory) nutrient dense tissue builders and (good prostaglandin numbers) to include most herbs like ginger and turmeric which are major alkalizers and anti-inflammatoires that are incredibly safe. Try turmeric/ginger today if you are not already. More than anything, cut acids like processed foods and simple carbs to nothing and if you have anything that includes (unfermented)soy products, aspartame neurotoxin or MSG neurotoxins, quit them today. Your pain and menstrual issues could change very quickly.
I had a girl that was told she would never have kids again only to do this very routine and 6 moths later preggie with a little girl. She was the same stature as well as you describe. Blessings in Health
