Hopeful development....

I currently live and work about three hours from my family. I have been doing this long-distance stuff for five years, about to start the sixth. This is my second job. The first was much further away, but was at a good school. Where I am now is very politically fraught, and clearly there is no advancement/change possible, even though it is closer to my family.

There was a posting yesterday for a job about an hour away from my family. It is at a school that is similar in some ways to the university I teach at now, but seems better in other ways. I would be teaching actually in my area, and there is a department to support what I do, whereas now I teach in a closely related discipline and am housed in a department that has little relation to what I do. The workload would be about the same, but there would be further support for what I do. And it would end this commuting relationship. I could actually live in a place where I knew people and had a support-system.

The job call has an open period of one week, to start in mid-August. I sent in my materials yesterday. They will have to scramble to get someone in place by the time classes start. Of course, they may have an inside candidate.

I am excited, because given the depression that has fallen on me in recent years, this could be a change for the better. Of course, I am cautious, not wanting to give too much energy to hope only to be disappointed.

This sounds like a wonderful oppotunity, Myself. I hope it turns out to a fresh start for you, as you said - a change for the better.

I know the past few months have been very hard on you and your family. It would be nice to be closer to your family and friends, the support system, personally and professionally, would be a blessing for you.

I'm glad you sent in your materials yesterday. Hopefully, you will get a positive response very soon. I know how difficult it can be to work w/  school 'politics', way too much drama.

Wow...I had no idea you have been that far from your family...That has to be extremely difficult:(

I will say some prayers that this works out for you! I know what you mean about being cautiously optimistic as I hate looking too forward to something and have it not work out...
