Hi Everyone,

I have a question about Florida and multiple chemical sensitivity and a question about cleaning products and mcs.

My fiance and I have been looking at southwest Florida homes for sale on line and he brought to my attention that he and I may have a problem with the grass fires in Florida during the winter? Unfortunately I can't be around smoke due to my chemical sensitivity and my asthma. Could this be an issue for me? Thanks!

My second question has to do with carpet/upholstery cleaner. I arrived home and my fiance had cleaned the upholstered furniture with a carpet/upholstery cleaner he's been using for many years. I was wondering why my throat began to burn. Is there a product for cleaning upholstery that would be okay to use around a person with mcs?

I lived in the panhandle of FL back in the late 80's...And even though where you all are looking to live may have some issues with the fires, I don't think it should be a huge concern.

And as far as products go, there was the recent thread on here about how sensitive many of us are with smells and chemicals. I've had trouble since I was a child so it doesn't have to do with Fibro. I can't stand to be around things like bleach, vinegar, or harsh chemicals.

I just use all natural/organic products...these are easy to find in stores or online.

The good news is that you aren't on any medications that would be an issue in Florida as they have, unfortunately, one of the higher rates of abuse down there. So many Drs. are hesistant to prescribe certain pain meds and muscle relaxers.

Even so, before any move, you should line up new Drs. down there and have appts. set up in advance. Same thing with gathering all your medical records and have your Drs. you see now write some notes about your treatment plan specifics to be able to give to the new Drs.

I realize all of that is in your medical records...but it really helps to have a "summary" written up and provided by your Dr. where they aren't telling a new Dr. how to treat, but just showing a quick snapshot of everything you have done previously and what worked and didn't work.

I cannot use the aerosol spray-foam carpet or upholstery cleaners or I get a reaction that is much like you described. I steam clean the carpets and upholstery because I find the types of cleaners that are used in these are not as irritating to me. Also, I once needed to clean the upholstery and was out of the cleaner that I normally use, but found a recipe for upholestry cleaner online using dish soap and water. You use a mixer, and then apply the foam with a sponge to the furniture. Nothing about this seemed to be irritating to the respiratory tract, and it seemed to work fairly well. I just applied it, scrubbed, and then used the carpet steamer to pull the excess out with.

Yes we need to be bit careful while selecting cleaning products. Some of them are very harmful especially for allergic persons
