I had a wonderful post but my computer decided to kick me off the internet and I lost it. :( I'll try to remember what I wrote...
I have had a sleep study.
They basically wire you for sound. Wires are everywhere, monitor around chest. You have to go through two nights. The first one you sleep with the wires only. The second one they wire you up and place different types of mask on you to see which is best for your type of breathing and comfort. They also check to see which pressure level works for you.
Here's a tip- to get the glue out of your hair afterwards use "Witch Hazel". Rub it into the glue before wetting your hair, then wash until out.
Careful if you have any sores, it will sting terrible.
My sleep apnea is classified severe. I have to have my air pressure at 15 psi. The first couple of days are tricky to adjust, but I found a good option. My AVAP (Automatic Variable Air Pressure) adjusts for my sleep pressure and as a "ramp" option. I can program it to slowly increase the pressure. By the time it is at full strength I'm asleep and don't notice the air pressure. A properly fitted mask is very comfortable and gives no trouble. I can even sleep on my side and not have trouble.
There are many types of masks available. My mask covers my nose and mouth. I have a very comfortable head strap to hold it on. It looks like a giant cloth X laid out with buckles on two ends and velcro. It connects at the top of the mask around the top of my forehead. I can adjust how tight I want. The bottom of the X comes along my jawline and buckles into the lower end of the mask. I like my mask snug to my face so I tighten it up good. The mask can last for two years, just wash in vinegar every month. The cushions last 3-4 months, change them if they start leaking. The tube will last 6 months you have to wash it in vinegar and unscented shampoo every month. The machine (depending on the brand) can last five or more years. Mine is 6 years old and just beginning to show wear.
Before my mask I didn't dream. I was waking up every two minutes so I didn't have a deep sleep. I was so tired during the day. I sleep like the dead now. Dreaming all night long.... :)
I wouldn't give up my AVAP for all the money in the world.
