Got a message last night to call my PCP's office. They called during the day. My office mate also told me when I got back from my afternoon class that someone called and wouldn't leave a message.

I just tried to call and (of course!) the phone lines here are out at the moment. They have been having problems all week.

I have not been in to see the doctor recently. The last blood work I had done was more than a month ago.

Ever get the feeling of doom? And more often than not the doom is overblown by the reality?

Arghhh, the dreaded missed doctor's call. I agree very few things can make your stomach drop like seeing your doc's name on the caller ID or having a message on the answering machine to call him back.

It could be (probably is) something very simple like a billing issue or reminder. And yes, the reality is usually not nearly as horrific as what we imagine.

Hmmm...I can't imagine it would be something very wrong on your bloodwork as they would have contacted you a lot sooner...It only takes a week or less to get bloodwork back...

So you never get copies of all your bloodwork sent directly to you each time? This is something I would certainly request as you should be keeping copies of your own medical records.

My mom gets hers mailed within a week and they highlight anything that is a bit over or under.

As mentioned...it could be something very simple with billing or scheduling...or even something like you are low on a vitamin/mineral and need a supplement...

Try not to borrow worry from the future...it never changes the outcome...only ruins today!

She wanted to make sure I had seen the rheumatologist, since I had asked for a refill on tramadol. I forgot to get the rheumie to write a script for tramadol. My PCP is not comfortable with prescribing painkillers. I have to wonder why.

I guess I will need to call the rheumie and ask for a script to be filled, since the PCP is clearly making her preference known.

Since Tramadol is a controlled substance...many non PM Drs. are shying away from prescribing this anymore. States and the DEA are starting to require all non PMs to get more certification and get more training if they want to prescribe controlled substances for more than 3 months to a patient because that moves from an "acute" situation to a "chronic" one.

Don't be surprised even if your Rheumatologist decides soon to not do this as well. It's just the nature of the beast with the unfortunate abuse of controlled substances.

So, it may be something to start discussing with your Rheumy if they are comfortable taking this over long term or should you be referred to a PM Dr. for this.

There is a problem in my neck of the woods with people selling prescription drugs. I live in a quite poor zip code, with sections of suburban and then rural areas. There are illegal drugs being manufactured and every week you see in the news about arrests for prescription drug abuse.

I asked about a PM specialist, but neither doctor seemed to willing to take this step.

Unfortunately abuse is everywhere....from rural to urban areas...rich and poor...doesn't matter. So, this is the reason for the tighter regulations and why Drs. need better training when prescribing controlled substances.

I would speak with your Rheumy since your PCP is already saying they don't want to prescribe...I was just suggesting to make sure your Rheumy is ok to do this long term so you can know now instead of be caught of guard like now with having to switch Drs. for the Tramadol.
