jc77, I came across your post and had to sign up and reply!! I could have written it myself. Holding my head up is my worst symptom.
I had a whiplash incident when I had really long hair. That was about 1984. I was diagnosed with Fibro in 1987 when it wasn't heard of to often. It has gotten progressivly worse over the years. I had a double fusion in my Cervical 5/6-6/7 in 2008. I wish I could say it helped alot but unfortunately not very much. I have to lay down to get any relief.
I find myself constantly stretching, cracking and rubbing my neck.
I have to try to keep it straight or I really pay for it. After I have been upright for a while, I say I have to go take my head off for a while.
I lay on an ice pack for a while, then up and down all day. I say I am having a problem with gravity today since I can feel it pushing on me. The best thing (next to moving to the moon) is going in a hot tub or pool. I don't see a Chiro anymore but there is nothing like getting a massage and having someone hold my head while putting their fingers in just the right place. I have had every type. Cranial Sacral (?) works the best for me. I just wish I could afford to have them more often! It's hard to describe the pain since I have problems with all of my muscles but if I could eliminate one, it's definately the heavy head. I tell people it feels like my head is sitting on my neck wrong even with the fusion.
I wanted to share this with you to let you know you are not alone.
I know exactly what you mean. I didn't intend to start off writing a book.....my apoligies
