OT: Big change finally official

I'm sorry it came to this, but sometimes we have to make these decisions.  It's hard but from what I have read on your threads, you have given it your all.  My husband is a college professor.  It has become a living nightmare...enuff said.  I'm sure you know what I mean.

Wishing you the best with your move. When you first hinted that a big change was coming up, I thought perhaps you were going to move closer to your partner. I think it is great that you will be closer to him and your family. New opportunities await you. I applaud your willingness to allow yourself a new adventure!!! Well, good for you for having the courage to do what is best for you. I wondered if this was what your change was going to be.

My dad was a college professor too, and he was sickened by the changes in the climate at his school that started in the mid-eighties, I believe...the shift in priorities...and it's only gotten worse.

It's not a kind and gentle world out there right now, is it? I wish you the best of luck in finding a new job!

Myself, this could be the best thing ever for you! I could tell from your previous posts that you were not happy and that can play a part in your illnesses, too.

My husband was a teacher and he loved it. But, when I left teaching to raise our children, he really didn't make enough to support us comfortably. While he was a teacher (math and physical science) he worked with the huge time-share computer at the high school and taught himself how to use it and also wrote the text book that the school system used to teach their new computer classes. Computer science wasn't offered when we were in college. This computer was one of those huge Univac computers and this was about ten years before PCs came out.

Anyway, he ended up leaving teaching and going into the computer field and it was the best thing he could have done. Any job he had, they would send him to classes and he would come back and teach the rest of the department. This saved money for the businesses and he had these courses added to his resume. He eventually settled into a great company but still kept his fingers in teaching. He taught a computer language at a university one night a week and enjoyed that, too. So your experiences in education can still be used in entirely different positions.

You just might find another teaching position when you get to the DC area or you might find something you like better but don't realize it yet. But, you do know you will be happier and not alone either and those are big pluses.

I'm proud of you for making such a difficult decision and I know you didn't take this lightly. It can be frightening right now but I think you will be far happier there then dealing with what you have in the job you have just left. I'll be praying that the perfect job will be awaiting you when you get there.

Now, pace yourself during your move. You want to feel your best when facing your bright new future.

Thanks all. I am actually, at this moment, happy about the decision. We have ten days of classes, finals, and then the wrap upweek culminating in graduation. I need to start notifying people and close students, so they can get their ducks in a row. My standard line is " for personal reasons" and, frankly, no one lookspast the dysfunction of the place to wonder about health.

It will be good to be under the same roof as the guy, again. This summer is our twelfth year together, and we have been in seperate cities for the past six. My health has been steadily getting worse for nine months or so. the gentleman is delighted, because he really has not liked my current place of employment.

There are a couple of things I can likely pick up when I get home, at least temporarily. Ultimately, I would like to work with disadvantaged or low-income kids again, outreach of some sort,
community building. As for teaching, likely not. I would rather go back to my first passion of performance.

I am hoping that by mid-June, the transition will be completed. It will take me time to pack this place up. After six years with two houses, we have two of everything! Some will be donated or given away, others will be packed. And my books. Oh, dear.

But, it's all good, for the good. I gave it a shot here for four years, it didn't work out, so it's time to try something else.

School as business - yep...even in the elementary schools I sub in. Test scores the only thing that matters.

I'll sometimes ask the kids if they know what the word they're chorusing back to me means. Usually, no.

Before I left this past year I noticed a gradual swing to the other direction in some areas. Our state was getting into critical thinking again at the primary level again. I hope it's a signal to a new method growing. Who knows?
I'm kind of glad to get out of the politics of it myself.
