Densensitization?

I've been wondering about a symptom I get sometimes where I feel as though my fingertips are desensitized. Not exactly numbness, just that feeling you get after you've been rubbing a piece of fabric or something for a long time. Do you guys know what I mean? Its not tingling or numbness its like a change in perception of what a surface is supposed to feel like. I know its hard to explain but my best description of this symptom is that of a desensitized sensation

Well I've noticed this happens to me usually after a hot shower while I'm putting on lotion...suddenly I notice my finger tips and even the balls of my feet feel different on surfaces but they are not numb either and there is no loss of sensation, I've tested different objects heavy and light and everything feels normal, but I just get this hyper awareness of a change in sensation. Is this what small fiber neuropathy is like?? Does anyone have any insight on this?

Or perhaps I've just become obsessed with my fingertips and toes...the symptoms are all so vague that its making feel like I'm going crazy!

Yes I do have this, and I'm afraid I have no insight. My whole body feels wacky, different parts at different times. Nothing feels like it used to, that's for sure! My left leg and foot are the worst, but my hands have that feeling you describe too.

You're not going crazy....but it is hard to adjust to. I can't remember, Liz, how long you've had Fibro, but it takes time to accept the new normal. Over 25 years for me, and sometimes I still rage against it - for all the good it does...we're only human.

I wonder if it is in any way related to thyroid..since 2 of you have a thyroid condition. Well, I'm glad I'm not alone in this and that it may just be more fibro-related junk. Its crazy because I didnt have any of these symptoms back when I was first diagnosed.

Debbie, to answer your question..I was diagnosed in 2004 but I got better within a year and decided the doctor was wrong..so basically I've been in denial for the past 8 years! Back then I had 50% of the symptoms, but now I have close to 80 or 90%! I've experienced almost everything on the very long symptom list as I've gotten older. My primary doctor is still running a few more tests before he sends me back to the rhuematologist, but I have to say, I saw him twice in the last 4 years to be evaluated for other issues and he never once mentioned Fibromyalgia (different rheumatologist). My primary doc is the one who got me thinking about Fibro again and now he is starting to think that is all that is going on with me....
