I can't imagine NOT treating the tender points. I use tennis balls, ice, massage - anything to give attention to the points. It hurts like crazy, but it does provide some relief. I've worked with aggressive massage/physical therapists who do some very painful massage (tears to my eyes, white light, cold sweat painful) - and the treatments often buy me days/weeks of relief.
I've also been seeing a chiropractor who uses A.R.T. - it's a lot less painful and seems to help.
