I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia a few years ago. I was taking Cymbalta and Lyrica and felt amazing while on it. Then I moved, switched jobs and had to take Kaiser Permanente for my insurance. They do not prescribe those med's b/c they are so expensive. I am now taking Effexor. It helped at first but not as well as the other med's. I still had aches but I could handle it. The last few months it keeps getting worse and today I feel the worst I have ever felt. I ache all over as if I have the flu and muscle aches as if I have been exercising for days on end. If I am sitting and get up, it hurts like crazy. I feel like, I think a 90 year old feels. I'm 47. I saw my doctor a few months ago and he acted like Fibro was a bad word and explained that he calls it something else (I can't remember the name he used) and told me to take Tylenol. He kept giving me the dosage of what can be taken daily. Well Tylenol is not cutting it at all and I hate taking it so much even if I am allowed so much per day. That can't be good for you. I don't take Ibuprofen often b/c of my Crohn's. I have emailed the doc to get something going b/c this is torture! I have a conference coming up in December for work and I will be on my feet a good bit of the time. Thanks for letting me vent to others who know what it's like. I took yesterday off and If I had my car with me today I would have left early (I car pool). When it effects my work then I need to get some answers. If my doctor doesn't do something I am finding another.

I have Crohns and do take ibuprofen and Tylenol. I don't like taking it but have to if I want to walk. I have a back problem along with fibro.

I also take magnesium malate, vitamin D3, and a muscle relaxer called Robaxin. These all have helped me a lot with pain. Maybe they would help you too. There are links in Fibro101 about the magnesium and vitamin D3 and how they work in the body. Check it out.

Ask your doctor to put you on gabapentin. It's the older version of lyrica.

I went through a period of time when my old doctor wanted me to take tylenol or ibuprofen. She even told me to take them together. I found that it did nothing for my extreme pain days. My new doctor prescribed me long release tramadol 100mg. I have found it to be very helpful, but I am also on lyrica. I just wanted to share that I understand how it can be frustrating to be told just take tylenol (although I know this works for some people). Another thing too -- in Canada lyrica is now available in generic form. Maybe that is something to look into.

I know what you mean - unfortunately, Tylenol and ibuprofen don't help my muscle or nerve pain, either (it's weird, though, it does help my mouth pain if I have something going on there...)

My doctor told me that Gabapentin, which Joy mentioned, is basically generic Lyrica, so maybe that's what you're going to be looking into. It helps me, since I've had a disc problem and surgery for it.

It does sound like maybe you need a new doctor! Good luck finding one who'll listen.

Mj1966- I would look for another Doctor, especially if my dr. didn't want to believe fibro exist. I don't believe in giving Dr's my hard earn money for crappy care! When your in constant pain it takes a toll on your mind and body. My health deteriorated from contant pain to the point I had to stop work. I hope you can find a good Dr. that can help you out. You might be surprised how some of the old meds work well still for fibro. It takes time to find that right cheap combo. It might be worth talking to a pharmacist about what is available in some of the cheaper meds used for fibro. I always use them.
