Is it common to start with heartburn? And to have that as well as other types of pain in other areas? Or are they two separate things I am having?
I do plan on talking to my doctor but would like some input from people who live with it too.

GERD (reflux disease) is one of the illnesses that tends to co-exist with fibro. I don't know if doctors know why, but many of us also suffer with GERD and/or IBS.
Here are a couple of links that discuss fibro and the conditions that frequently occur with it:

I take medication for GERD, but what has helped me the most is elevating the head of my bed. I used bed risers just on the headboard part, making the head higher than the foot. This is one of the easiest, cheapest, low side effect things you can try to help alleviate GERD symptoms.

I agree with AustenFan about
raising the head of the bed. It helps me immensely because I've always had issues with reflux when I was asleep.
Avoiding foods like tomatoes and tomato products, citrus, coffee, tea, spicy foods, alcohol, mint, chocolate and soda. Keep a food diary so you can see what might be causing your heartburn.

I can't say I have ever had an issue with heartburn. But I do have other digestive issues. Fibro can vary widely, person to person.

Make sure to go to the gerd forum here to find some other great tips on how to hand it.

Nope, not here (knock on wood.) My chronic gut issues are all lower-down.

I suffer from Gerd. I take meds for it and monitor what I eat and the time of the day. Following the rules to GERD will keep it managed fairly well. Just remember if you do take meds for GERD, some of the meds deplete magnesium. I found that out the hard way.

I have GERD from Crohns' disease. I take Pepcid AC for it and Tums. These seem to do the trick along with avoiding some foods that bother me...like Namian mentioned.
Angel is right about
watching what meds you take for GERD. The proton pump inhibitors can cause osteoporosis if taken long term. I, like Angel, found out the hard way.

I also have GERD as well as Gastritis. I take Prilosec.
Angel, I had no idea the meds could cause low magnesium. That explains why taking magnesium malate helped so much with pain.

I have had heartburn my whole life, including as a baby when I continuously cried in pain and regurgitated my food again and again. I had a lot of trouble sleeping my whole life, even as a baby. My mother had 3 other, normal babies to compare me to, in case you were wondering.
