Paper less Dr. Office

I was just thinking how much I like this new system my Dr's Office are using. They have went to almost paperless on how they function. Everything is done by computer. No more writing scrips or orders for blood test and X-rays. I am from the old nursing school, so this seems so strange to me. I can acess my chart from home and ask questions to my Dr. or ask for refills too. The best thing is you can read the Dr. notes because they are dictated into the computer.

At the end of my visit I do get a copy of my visit in full detail. All my diagnoses are listed. My instructions and all my meds. I guess I was living in the dark ages for so long because I was going to a Dr. that stills hand writes all her notes. My chart was always a mess and you couldn't figure out what was what.

I was wondering does your Dr's do the paper less system?

The doctors had to switch to computerized records for the healthcare plan. My doctor isn't happy and I sure don't appreciate all my health records out there for hackers to get into. This is just my personal opinion.

I'm with Sherrine on this one.

My doctor (and his head nurse) really dislike the new system. Another nurse I know said she feels like she spends much less time with patients and more time specifically and painstakingly following the new protocol. And I, too, am very wary of more personal info going electronic. shocked

My dermatologist is retiring because of the new electronic records mandates. He is getting older, and he just didn't want to fool with the expense and the hassle of switching.

I also have several doctors in the same clinic. Every nurse, assistant, doctor, etc. in the clinic can see all of my records. I can see the benefit if a team of doctors is necessary to treat a condition, but I don't see the benefit of my allergist having access to my gynecological records. It makes me uncomfortable.

I also hate the idea of my records being so easily accessible to so many people. Used to, my doctor had to personally request my record from the record office and sign it out. Each doctor had a separate file that just dealt with his particular specialty. Now it just pops up on the computer for pretty much anyone in the clinic with a "need" to see it or anyone savvy enough to hack it. So much for HIPAA.

Another perspective.

I have had tests done twice (and paid for twice), because some physicians were not computerized. It made a huge difference when my mother had serious health concerns a year ago.

I know it's a hassle, but so is every adoption of technology. Computerized records were coming; it was only a matter of when and how.

All my docs have been using computerized records for a long time now. I don't personal have access to them though. Having a handful of specialists, my rheumy can bring up recent tests from my pulmonologist or cardiologist. I like to get hard copies of some test results and their office will print them out for me.

There is always a nurse present entering info onto the computer while the doc is with me. I like the fact that he can easily compare blood work to prior visits and has easy access to what tests need to be ordered and what scripts need to be sent to my pharmacy for refills. It helps keep the docs stay on top of things.

I learned something here. I didn't realize they had no choice of doing electronics records. I come in very frequently and I can see my INR bloodwork more easily now. This way the Dr. and I can see the pattern it has been going. At least you don't have to try to read the chicken scratch the Dr's use to write. Lol as a retired nurse it was hard to read orders.

A situation that could be good or bad, I guess, depending on the intentions of the person who has the access.

I haven't experienced this yet, but probably will next time I see my doctor. He was forced (by economics) to join one of the superconglomerate health systems, after being on his own his whole career. Last time I was there, he had just moved, and had someone following him around, showing him how to record everything.
