I make up a lot of my stretches, too. Whatever is stiff, I stretch...very gently.
BUT, I did learn good neck stretches in physical therapy last year. You look straight ahead and then bring your head down. Then turn and raise your head to the right...so you are looking over your shoulder. I would stretch that as far as I could without causing pain. Then you do the same thing for the left side. By doing this, I got more range of motion in my neck and it's good when I'm driving, too. I used to have to turn my whole body in the seat to check the "blind spot" when changing lanes. Now, I only have to turn my much looser neck. Hope this helps you.
