A friend of mine has pain in the stomach-liver area now and then, so underwent an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed mild hepatomegaly but every thing else was normal. Plus there was urine retention. Bloodwork is normal. The pains have reduced now in intensity and frequency, but I am wondering what the cause could be. Doctors say it can happen because of a variety of reasons and its nothing to worry about. Anyone with a similar experience ? The person does NOT have any form of hepatitis ( chronic or otherwise ).

I don't have anything concrete to say personally but you should research on a known-to-be-trustworthy site, like mayoclinic.com. Their opening statement is, "Normally, an adult liver is about the size of a small football. Sometimes, however, the liver becomes enlarged. This is known as enlarged liver, or hepatomegaly (hep-uh-to-MEG-uh-le). Enlarged liver isn't a disease. It's a sign of an underlying problem, such as hepatitis, congestive heart failure or cancer. Treatment of an enlarged liver depends on the cause."

Well, i guess we can rule out cancer or tumors because the ultrasound was clear on that. There were no lesions or anything on the liver. Congestive heart failure is something that hasn't come up in the doctor meetings. Let's see how things go.

What I am also leaning towards is non alcoholic fatty liver disease. The symptoms are exactly what is happening and the person being 50 years old and obese is a candidate for this.

What about gallbladder, that can be mild or intense pain. It can go on for years because it comes and goes. My mother had it for about 15 years of and on till she finally had enough. I on the other had had such severe pain and infection that it had to be taken out quickly. Especiall since the Dr. I went to for a week and a half said I had nothing . She just kept on checking me for Maleria. ????

I was told bloodwork showed no hep a, b, c or d. Is your friends liver profile normal. Don't give up searching for answers. It took my doctors a number of years to find that I had NASH. Even with a change in diet(No meat)to vegan I have still progressed to fibrosis. Tell your friend to hang in there and keep looking for answers.
