John I am having brain fog today. I thought I read your post while I was at work today.......I didn't! or I didn't see this one.

Gosh you continue to amaze me....... how you do it ........I'll never know..........have to have a lot of mind over matter.....me....if I get a tummy ache ...I'm the biggest baby.

As for my house .....I love it. But I am still unpacking. I wish I could just wiggle my nose like Samantha on Bewitched and everything would be in it's place. That would be so cool. As for the house warming party....I have to buy a couch/love seat and a stove first. No place for anyone to sit and it would have be microwaved food. That wouldn't be cool. I just got a good idea....it could be a "bring your own chair and food house warming party"!!
What do you think?? Do you think anyone would come???? Seriously I hope to have one in November if I can get myself into over drive.

Anywhooo, you are such an inspiration to me and to others with the battles you are fighting....Give it a knock out punch........ Have a good night..........T. and P. ( And that's not toilet paper. )

Just a check in -- I've got 9am all-day chemo Tuesday. I wanna whine but am trying not to. Hope to settle down a bit so I can post.

Thank you John, I know how hard it is for you to post right now. I don't want you thinking that we have forgotten about you. With your whit and compassion, not to mention your knowledge of liver disease you are a very important link in our chain. Good luck with the chemo today.

I was so glad to hear from you.  I've been really worried.  You are definitly a trooper.  Much stronger then I could ever be.  Hang in there and thank you so much for keeping us posted.

Hello John

Either you John or someone else please explain to me what this means? Is it just until the chemo treatments are over? Why did they bother taking you off the list when they will just have to turn around and put you right back on again. Will you have to go through all of those tests again?

Hi JoAnn,

It's all about survival rates and cost. If there is a likelihood of cancer recurrence, 50% in this case, they will not place one on the list. If there is recurrence, next time it could metastasize and become unsurvivable.

First, there is the human cost. With over a thousand people per year dying while awaiting a liver transplant, people dying of other things (like cancer) are not placed on the list.

Then there is the monetary cost. A liver transplant is the most complex operation and costs about a half-million dollars. The success and future approvals to do transplants are based on outcomes, regardless of cause. So if a person is alive X number of months / years after the transplant, it is a positive outcome. If that person is dead, regardless of whether it was due to the liver disease, cancer, bus accident (or in my future case, being struck by a meteorite), it is a failed outcome.

So for me, I must put the cancer into remission, not have a recurrence for an extended period of time, then they may place me back on the list. And yes, all the test must be redone -- but they must do that even when one is already on the list. They must know that the patient will survive the operation.

Thanks for the explanation. You did it well and I totally understood it. I have no doubt you will be on the transplant list again. And by golly I got a fix of John funny out of your explanation. I doubt that the meteorite will hit you. It might get your house but never you! Just keep up and I'm sending VERY positive vibes your way.

Hi all,

I hope that you are all doing well. I haven't really been keeping up on what's happening at the forum.

So a quick update: This begins my 3rd week of 7 for the neck / throat / tonsil cancer. The chemo is once a week and the radiation is daily (5x). The ups and downs of the chemo aren't too bad but the cumulative effects from the radiation are becoming overwhelming. The rad makes my throat feel like it's been in the 'turkey fryer' for a few minutes too long.

I've worked my way from the lightweight painkillers, to the heavyweight, and now to the addictive patches. Even at that, I am glad to have placed the feeding tube. Every swallow seems to peg the pain meter. What a woosie!

Fever spiked on the weekend and so am on a short course of antibiotics.

I miss keeping up to date on what's happening to you guys; and miss being almost clearheaded. (well, maybe not clearheaded -- less drugged, perhaps)

Please forgive me if I am repeating things already posted. And thanks for being here. I hope soon to be able to tell you that I'm done with this and ready to go back on T-list.

Eyes closing -- no music tonight.

{{{{{{{{{{John}}}}}}}}}}  What a grueling schedule of chemo/radiation!   What I went through was a picnic in comparison. 

Yep, they know you will have a raw throat, thus the foresight to install a feeding tube.

I'm off to Mayo to have x-rays of my hips and a f/u visit with my orthopedic doc.

Hi John, I am so sorry that you are having such a rough time with everything. Don't worry about the forum. Just take good care of your self. Do you have anyone staying with you through this? I sure hope so.

Once you are through this chemo/rad stuff and back on the T-list you'll have plenty of time to play catch up on the forum. And I for one can not wait for that day.

Hi Connie and everyone,

I hope that you are all doing as well as possible. Keep up the hard work and good attitudes. My attitude sucks right now.

In general, I am well. Almost half way through the cancer treatments. Unfortunately, right now I have no reference points to evaluate where I am medically, or emotionally. I'm stumbling around looking for a 'happy place', or at least a not-hellish place. You know that I am exaggerating, and whining, and feeling a bit beaten up.

Thanks for your thoughts, prayers and concern. I miss communicating with you guys.

Thanks for the reply, John!  How is the tube feeding going?  How much weight have you lost?  If too much, you can fantasize about putting it back on when you are "all better."  Strawberry shortcake, blueberry and cherry cobbler, hot fudge sundaes, ICE CREAM...lots of Breyer's!   smilewinkgrin
