Wayne, I just posted to you in your post about the problems with ascites, etc. You answered some of my questions here. It would be worth it to get your wife to a hepatologist for management and referral to UNC Chapel Hill. Make sure that they get that referral! Perhaps then you could communicate with the hepatologist by phone or e-mail to avoid making that trip.
Yes, the frustration is just part of battling this disease. SS takes its time. You can hurry them along by providing up-to-date medical records and reports of all testing to them.
You have to be very proactive. A primary care/family practice doc is not qualified to deal with liver disease...at all! Is there a GI doc that your wife could go to that is closer than the hepatologist? Someone she could go to at least bi-weekly?
I had become proactive prior to ever going through liver cancer and osteonecrosis. My PMD had dropped the ball several times. I think its often a matter of too many patients and not enough time given to them individually.
Perhaps someone here will have some other suggestions for you. Sometimes you just have to use your own judgment.
