liver test result reassure me

This was posted in the Kidney Forum and the member asked me to move it to here...

hi just received my test results today. tests showed abnormal liver enzymes the test that was carried out came days after finishing the triple therapy for h pylori

800mg metronidazole daily
2000mg amoxacillan daily
60mg lanzoprazole daily

previous test result came back with low folate levels this test was before i started the triple therapy
my question is do u think the abnormal liver enzymes may be down to the amount of antibiotics i had
to take for 8 days been told i will have a re-test in 4 weeks

Hi. I am a 55 year old male with Hepatitis C and Cirrhosis of the liver. I have had Cirrhosis since 1986 and I believe that I am now in the last stage of Cirrhosis of the liver. Can anyone please tell he about each stage and ecspecially the last stage. Thank you for any and all info that anyone can give me.

Welcome to the forum, Scott and Marine.  Scott, it is very possible that the high dose of antibiotics you were on elevated your liver levels.  Hopefully, they will have normalized at your 4-wk. retesting.

Marine, I'm very sorry to hear that you have end-stage liver disease.  If you will go the folder at the top of the page, Hepatitis Resources, there is a lot of information there on the different stages of liver disease.  I think you will find it helpful.  Are you under the care of a hepatologist?  I certainly hope so.  Is there a possibility of a transplant?

Marine.........I am sorry that you have this disease. But I am glad you found us. You may want to start your own thread by clicking on the start new thread button. Have you got a chance to read our educational thread yet??? It does have a lot of good information about liver disease in it.

I am curious about your screen name......were you a marine????

Scott good luck with your retest. I sure hope it was just the antibiotics..........let us know what the out come is when you get it.

Scott, were you taking any cholesterol medications at the time? These antibiotics can interact with cholesterol medications and cause liver inflammation.

no I was not taking any other medication. I have had a few blood tests over the past 6months and this is the first time that liver enzymes came back abnormal i was warned not to drink while taking metronidazole and i didn't i had a pretty intense 8 day course of antibiotics i am hoping its
just been a bit toxic for my liver plus very low folate levels may have also contributed in some way.

would a full blood count pick up on this? or does the liver test need a separate test

There are some antibiotics that can cause LFT's to rise.  Hopefully they'll be back down when you retest in 4 weeks.  A regular CBC won't pick that abnormality up, you need the liver panel.  They take the blood together but the doc has to order the liver panel on the req sheet separately so the lab knows to run it.  How high were they?

I didn't ask to be honest. I am not worrying too much at the moment I am almost sure it is related to the high dose of antibiotics. almost positive
that a full battery of blood tests was carried out before this test result came up with the abnormal enzymes but will keep the forum updated when I have the re-test. I am back at the doctor before the 4 wk re-test so I will get my doctors opinion on the matter

anyone got any questions that might be relevant to ask the doctor? In regard to the result I almost always never ask enough questions.

Scott, really there are no questions to ask before the results of  your retesting, but if your liver enzymes are again elevated, I would ask for a referral to a hepatologist (liver specialist.)

fantastic news just received my results from my second liver function test and the results came back normal the practice nurse said it was more than likely toxicity from the medication I was taking

pretty happy ATM smilewinkgrin

Scott, that is great news!  I felt almost certain that the elevated enzymes were from the antibiotics, but now you know for sure.  Congrats!
