Emma,
Going green is good for all of us. Many chemicals are trans-dermal (can enter our bodies through our skin). Gloves should always be worn when using chemicals, but I hate wearing them. If I have to use chemicals, I make a habit of washing my hands often to remove any residue. The fumes are not good even for a healthy person.
Chances are that your DH was simply worn out from cleaning the shower. Harvey would attempt similar projects when he was feeling good. He would wash the car and then lay in bed for two days because of it. But, you’re right, it is important for DH to feel normal from time to time. So long as he isn’t encephalopathic, let him go for it. He will learn his limitations over time. But I agree with you, curb the chemicals.
There is a wealth of home chemical-free remedies on the Internet. Do a little research and experiment a bit. I’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised.
I use hydrogen peroxide and dish soap to clean my showers. Peroxide is a version of bleach (H2O2). It’s very cheap and effective (kills germs) and you don’t have to deal with harsh fumes. I like to spray it on, scrub it lightly with a brush and let is sit for 20-30 minutes. Then I spray on some water and lightly scrub it again and rinse. I also use this on my counter tops and tile floors in the same manner.
I’ve grown to hate ammonia (we all know why) so I don’t use Windex anymore. I know vinegar is effective, but I don’t like the smell of it. I clean all of my windows with Dawn dishwashing liquid and water. Just make up a sink full as if you were going to wash dishes. Dip in a clean dish cloth and ring out the excess. Then wipe your windows. This leaves a beautiful streak-free shine without the chemical smell. It’s great for any glass surface; TV, glass table tops, picture frames, etc.
