Well, I have a new view on this...
Mike was a drinker all his adult life and a drug abuser early in his life...and so both Hep C and alcoholic liver disease were his road to ESLD.
When he was desperate last summer/fall, the docs were pretty clear...you will die within 3 months OR you can give sobriety a shot.
The man sobered up the first day it was put like THAT. And I believe he is done with it.
He quit drugs cold turkey and he was using heroin.
He quit smoking and was a 2 packs of Marlboros smoker.
And he quit drinking in September 2010 and that is done for every.
He got his new liver May 2, 2011 and he better NOT ever think about drinking again!
They were very nice to him at the transplant program when he proved he was really done with the booze. But the head of surgery was very clear...if you drink, we drop you like a hot potato. If you stay sober we will take care of your meds and treatment for the rest of your life! And he pretty much is tethered to his post transplant care OR ELSE.
At first when transplantation was introduced, he felt unworthy...that he had gotten himself in this position and the livers should only go to folks who had liver failure for reasons outside of lifestyle choices. But with some therapy and from a side email from **David** he changed his tune. Some poor guy was likely to make a mistake and die anyway...so what better way to celebrate a life too short than to donate organs to others with a chance to live.
I've done a lot of reading on Alcohol treatment programs. There is a 90% recidivism rate for alcoholism. Bad statistic. But there is a good side. If you keep quitting enough times, you get to be in the 10%!!!!! There is always hope.
I have also read that the rate of recidivism post transplant is VERY LOW. Woo Woo. That is a statistic that makes me smile.
Good luck.
