biliruban and protein in urine with Lupus diagnosis

Are keep wondering if I may have hepatitis on top of Lupus, because they just found bilirubin in my urine. I liver panel is being done and kidney urine tests. I have had boughts of nausea and pain in my upper abdomen area. Im so tired all the time. Do you have any words of wisdom for me? smhair

Definitely see a hepatologist.  Having Lupus (an autoimmune disorder) puts you at a predisposition to acquiring more autoimmune disorders.  One is autoimmune hepatitis (AIH).  It is not a viral hepatitis.  So you've likely had the same meds for your Lupus.  although, having Lupus, you know that the disease can affect multiple organs.  So it may not be a separate disease but that your Lupus is causing liver inflammation.

What meds are you on for your Lupus? 

Please stay away from alcohol during this time until you resolve what's going on.

Thanks for your help. I am on lots of meds. Plaquinil, lodine, skelaxin, cymbalta, levoxil, lyrica, vit. D

Does hepatitis symptoms come and go? My bm's are not light colored now and nausea lifted. My ankles are so swollen at the end of the day. They pit. This ie so new to me. Thanks again for listening.

Dany is the resident expert here on autoimmune and related liver diseases, but I would think that when you have lupus flares it causes inflammation of your liver...thus the transient quality of your symptoms.  Primary liver disease causes ongoing symptoms that tend to get worse over time and seldom retreat...unless it's alcohol related and the pt. stops drinking and changes his diet.  Even then, it's sometimes to late.

Have you spoken to the rheumatologist about the fluid retention?  Liver function tests can fluctuate.  Again, it may just be the Lupus doing it.  Did you bring up the possibility of having some antibody tests specific for AIH or PBC done?  One doesn't always test positive for antibodies for AIH (there's anti SMA, LKM-1, anti SLA).  AMA can be used for both but is much more common in PBC.  A liver biopsy is the best diagnostic tool though.

Have you gotten your lab tests back for blood levels yet?

I think it's more than likely your Lupus since that affects so much but best to speak to your docs about your concerns.
