Hello, All! I have not posted in a long time, mainly due to my busy schedule, but I do check in on you all as often as I can!

Hubby had gone about two years with no major "issues"...no seizures, etc. That is, until yesterday. Yesterday evening he had a seizure and since he had not had one, I went ahead and took him to the ER. Well, his ammonia level had risen to 78 (he's been higher), and electrolytes were all out of whack and he was dehydrated. So, they have admitted him, and so now they are trying to get him "balanced" and will hopefully be home in the next day or two.

Boy! This sure is an up and down rollercoaster and you forget or don't realize how much you take for granted the good days until a day like yesterday happened. Then, since it had been so long since he has been in the hospital, I almost forgot what to do! LOL!

Hi, Mer! So sorry to hear of the recent change with hubby. I know that must have felt like it came out of left field. Please do let us know what happens during his hospitalization and what they think is going on.

Hi Mer, thanks for the update. Sorry that he is having issues again. But sounds like you had a good break from them for a spell. I hope he gets balanced out soon. I was harder on me with my husband in the hospital than having him at home. Trying to work and take care of things at home and be at the hospital as much as possible wore me out. So take care of you too........thoughts and prayers.

Hi Mer,
I am sorry to hear that hubby has had to go to the ER. Hope that he gets rebalanced soon and you are all back to having good days. Thoughts and prayers for you.

Hello! He was discharged home today....they got the ammonia level back to "normal" and have increased the dosage on the seizure meds. This will be a mixed bag of tricks because he already is having memory loss issues, cognitive issues, etc and that is a combination of HE stuff and side effects of the seizure meds. However, one of the side of effects of the seizure meds is the memory loss, speech and cognitive issues, so increasing the dose may make those more amplified. He took the not driving anymore news better than I thought. Now that he's had a seizure he cannot drive for at least 6 months.

On the SS evaluation...I forgot to update that last week. We got a letter in the mail last week that SS thinks that he is still disabled so his disability will continue! WHEW! What a load of worry off!!

Mer, good news that he's home. Also on SSI. I hope his side effects won't increase with the increased dosage.

Thanks, Connie! I hope the side effects stay at bay as well. Poor guy has a hard enough time as it is and gets really frustrated sometimes because he realizes he cannot get the though processes, etc.

We were so relieved to get that letter from the SS office....major prayers answered!

On a side note, I am in an anatomy and physiology class this semester, and it feels good to have general knowledge of some of what the professor is talking about. The other day, he was talking about organs not functioning properly, in particular the liver and kidneys and ammonia building up in the system. I was able to chime right in!!

SS would have to be crazy not to consider him still disabled. But you never know with them.

Whether patient or caregiver, liver disease certainly provides a free education.
