I believe any dog is gonna be what you make it , I know alot of folks that breed pits for fighting and the owners will tell you quickly they wont turn there back on them . Animals are a product of there environment .
Cassy ( Pit ) displays no aggressive behavior because she is treated like a family member , She is very territorial and isn't allowed to be around other people than the family . That's why we got her . We don't live in a bad area but as the economy is down and unemployment is through the ceiling she provides a extra layer of protection around the house . She may not bite someone but the display of snarling teeth has thwarted a few overly curious folks . My step daughter and Cassy play well together .

I didn't say she's my pet , She's a companion . We walk together . At the rate humans seem to be going down hill it wont be long before " Planet of the Hawgs " will be a reality . Humans , You will make great pets .

That may be the answer to the aggressive pit bull thing: Anyone strange and not family. Although I've heard of a few owners whose pits turned on them (not fighting dogs) out of nowhere.

We have a Guard Rooster, The Kernel, that will do as much damage to a stranger as a small pit bull....Anytime a strange car pulls in he goes running to the driver's door and awaits...to attack. He guards our Petting Zoo animals from "the wild things" out here in the country. No Wild Hawgs, though.

Any animal has the ability to turn on the owner or trainer and perhaps the reasons pits get such a bad rap is the brute force of the attack . The wifes Yorkie snips but doesn't have enough clamping pressure to break the skin , But Cassy has the power to clamp down hard enough to suspend from a rope . I dont doubt she couldn't do damage to me if she wanted to but she also knows the repercussion of that behavior . She learned at a early age what a newspaper to the nose was like , She'll nearly knock her doghouse over trying to get in if she see's or hears a newspaper ruffling . She identifies the sound with she's in trouble . No need to pop her with it just hold it and pop it in your hand . Same applies to me and the Yorkie , Wife just pops the newspaper and we both cow down quickly .
